Head Coach Monica Dempsey and the Women's Volleyball team played three games in the Crosstown Tournament this weekend. They dropped their first two games against Lehigh and Lafayette, but finished the tournament on a strong note beating Farleigh Dickinson. Against Lehigh they lost in a matter of three sets, but put up a solid performance against Lafayette losing by a score of 3-2. In their last game against FDU, they would eventually get their first win of the season with a 3-2 score.
GAME 1: Saint Peter's (1-2) vs. Lehigh (4-2)
The Peacocks played the Lehigh Mountain Hawks in their first game of not only the Crosstown Tournament, but the season as well. They went on to lose in three consecutive sets against the experienced Mountain Hawks, who went 22-10 on the 2014 season.
Lauren Behrens displayed her senior leadership for the Peacocks, having seven kills. Right behind her was freshman Marlena Budna with six. Junior Kaitlyn Sitton helped the squad with nine digs. For Lehigh, Whitney Krantz led the Mountain Hawks with twelve kills. This loss would give the Peacocks their first loss on the season.
GAME 2: Saint Peter's (1-2) vs. Lafayette (4-1)
In their second appearance of the tournament, the Peacocks would face the Lafayette Leopards on Friday night. SPU put up a strong performance in this game, but would eventually fall just short of their first win of the season, losing 3-2. This was a productive loss, as Lafayette has a strong 4-1 record on the season.
Once again for the Peacocks, it was Lauren Behrens leading the way with 12 kills. In similar fashion as the first game, freshman Marlena Budna followed in her footsteps with 10 kills of her own. Freshman Greta Varvell had a solid performance in her second ever collegiate game, having 17 digs and also six kills. The loss would bring the Peacocks record to 0-2 on the young 2015 campaign.
GAME 3: Saint Peter's (1-2) vs. Farleigh Dickinson (1-6)
The Peacocks would make their third and final appearance in the Crosstown Tournament on Sunday afternoon, playing FDU at Lehigh University. SPU was able to pick up their first win on the 2015 season, as they went on to win 3-2.
In the third and final game,
Lauren Behrens and
Marlena Budna once again led the team in kills, eventually leading the Peacocks to victory.
Kenyale McGinnis was able to have her best collegiate game of her young career having 11 kills and 18 digs on the defensive end.
The Peacocks will be playing their next match on September 8 at St. Francis Brooklyn at 7PM.
