The Saint Peter's Peacocks (1-0-0) took on the UMass Minutemen (0-2-0) on Monday afternoon, in what was the first game for the Peacocks on the 2015 campaign. SPU struck early in the first period and wouldn't let their foot off the gas for the remainder of the game finishing with three total goals. Louis Mobbs, Ezequiel Cei and Andrew Romero were all able to find the back of the net in the match.
The Peacocks struck extremely early, with the first goal coming with only 1:15 on the clock, coming off the foot of
Louis Mobbs with the assist from
Michael Crentsil. UMass wouldn't give up too easy, as they pushed the ball towards their side of the field and were able to get two shots off. Jamie Cleland was impressive in net, saving both attempts and would eventually finish the day without letting anything get past him.
At the 18th minute mark SPU would strike again, as the Preseason All-MAAC team member
Luke Fairlamb found
Ezequiel Cei for a goal scoring opportunity. That goal would register Cei's first goal of the 2015 campaign, and Luke Fairlamb's first assist.
Only another six minutes would come off of the clock, before the Peacocks were ready to bury another ball in the back of the net. The distribution of the ball was very even, as this time around it was
Andrew Romero scoring not only his first goal of the 2015 season, but also his first goal of his career.
After halftime, the Peacocks led by a score of 3-0, and looked to keep the lead for an additional 45 minutes. Behind the stellar defense and great goalkeeping from Jamie Cleland, they were able to do just that. Mark Morris and Ty Goncalves were each able to record two shots on goal, none of which were able to find the net.
In the 70th minute of the contest, Mark Morris of UMass would get fouled in the penalty box resulting in a Penalty Kick. He was able to make solid contact, but he sailed it high and it would graze the crossbar above Cleland's head before heading out of bounds.
The Saint Peter's University Men's Soccer team will look to keep the ball rolling in their next contest against Robert Morris on Sept. 4 at 4pm. The next home game for the Peacocks will be on Sept. 12 against St. Francis Brooklyn at Jaroschak Field at 2pm.
