Box Score NEWARK, N.J. – NJIT defeated Saint Peter's 8-3 in non-conference baseball action on Tuesday.
Kyle Grimes (Iselin, N.J./JFK Memorial) paced the Peacocks (8-27-1) with a hit and an RBI while Chris Hugg (Ironia, N.J./Randolph), Nick Cardamone (Freehold, N.J./Freehold Township) and Nick Henriquez (Paramus, N.J./Paramus) each had a hit and a run scored in the loss.
Ed Charlton powered the Highlanders (19-17) with two hits, two RBIs and a run scored and Cody Kramer added a hit, two runs scored and two RBIs in the winning effort.
NJIT scored seven of the final eight runs to rally from a one-run deficit to earn the win after the two teams ended in an 8-all standstill on March 31 in Jersey City.
After Hugg gave Saint Peter's a 2-1 lead in the sixth when he scored on a wild pitch, the Highlanders scored four times in the sixth to take the lead for good.
NJIT scored the first two runs of the inning courtesy of two Peacocks errors before Kramer smacked a two-run homer to left field for a 5-2 lead.
Aided by another error, the Highlanders added a sixth run in seventh for a 6-2 advantage.
Saint Peter's got a run back in the eighth. Cardamone reached on an error with one out and Jon Kristoffersen (Jefferson, N.J./Jefferson Township) and Rob Moore (Ridge, N.Y./Longwood) reached on walks before all three runners moved up on a wild pitch scoring Cardamone to cut the margin to 6-3.
Charlton then capped an 8-3 victory with a two-run single in the eighth to give NJIT an 8-3 lead.
The Highlanders grabbed an early 1-0 lead in the first thanks to a Mike Rampone RBI groundout in the first.
The Peacocks then scored a run in the fourth and the sixth to take a 2-1 edge.
In the fourth, Henriquez doubled to right center and came around to score on Grimes' run-scoring single down the right field line to even the score at 1. Hugg doubled in the sixth, moved to third on a Moore groundout and raced home on a wild pitch to give Saint Peter's a 2-1 lead.
NJIT then scored four runs in the bottom of the sixth en route to an 8-3 win.
Tom Puza (Point Pleasant, N.J./Red Bank Catholic) took the loss for the Peacocks, allowing five runs (one earned) on six hits with three strikeouts in six innings of work.
Saint Peter's returns to action at home against Seton Hall on Wednesday. The Pirates downed the Peacocks 16-2 in South Orange on Mar. 18.
