Box Score NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. – Iona defeated Saint Peter's 5-0 to salvage one game in a three-game Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) baseball series on Sunday. The Peacocks won the first two games of the series on Saturday to take two out of three on the weekend.
Chris Hugg (Ironia, N.J./Randolph) paced Saint Peter's (6-24-1, 5-7 MAAC) with two hits in the loss.
Vinny DeMaria went 3-for-4 for two RBIs and two runs scored to pace the Gaels (12-25, 7-8 MAAC) while Eddie Macaluso tossed a complete-game five-hit shutout with eight strikeouts on the mound.
Iona scored four runs in the first inning and allowed Macaluso take care of the rest on the hill to take the final game of a three-game series.
The Gaels posted four runs in the first inning thanks to a Jimmy Guillano RBI dounle, a two-run triple by DeMaria and a Matt Flannery RBI single to left field for a 4-0 lead.
Iona added a run-scoring single through the right side off the bat of Jon Budesa in the eighth to seal the 5-0 victory.
Saint Peter's had six base runners on the day, but only got a runner to second in the fourth inning. With one out, Jon Kristoffersen (Jefferson, N.J./Jefferson Township) singled to right field and moved to second when Hugg singled through the left side to put runners on first and second. Macaluso got out of the jam with a double play and the Peacocks could not get a runner to second base the rest of the game.
Anthony Assante (Brick, N.Y./Brick Memorial) took the loss while Mark Wilson (Clark, N.J./Arthur L. Johnson) pitched well, allowing one run on five hits with three strikeouts in the final five innings.
Saint Peter's returns to action when Fairleigh Dickinson comes to Jaroschak Field on Tuesday. Game time is 3:30 p.m.
