Wagner Upends Saint Peter's Baseball, 11-6

Box Score

JERSEY CITY, N.J. – Wagner defeated Saint Peter's 11-6 in non-conference baseball action on Tuesday.

Chris Hugg (Ironia, N.J./Randolph) paced the Peacocks (4-22-1) with a 3-for-5 performance, including a grand slam, four RBIs and a run scored. Christopher Micak (Edison, N.J./Metuchen) added an RBI single off the bench.

Nick Mascelli hit a solo homer and added another RBI for the Seahawks (13-11) while Ben Ruta, Tommy Mazurkiewicz and Anthony Godino each registered two RBIs in the winning effort.

Each team scored four times in the first inning before Wagner scored in four of the last five innings and outscored Saint Peter's 7-2 in that stretch to earn the victory.

After Hugg tied the game at 4 on a grand slam in the first, neither team touched home until the fifth inning when the Seahawks posted three runs in the inning.

Mascelli gave Wagner the lead for good with a leadoff homer in the fifth. Mazurkiewicz added a sacrifice fly and Godino smacked an RBI single through the left side for a 7-4 lead.

The Seahawks added two runs in the sixth thanks to a Ruta two-run single up the middle to increase the margin to five runs. A Mascelli bases loaded walk in the seventh and a Sean Mazzio RBI single to right center in the eighth gave Wagner an 11-4 lead.

The Peacocks answered with two runs in the eighth to set the final score at 11-6. Tommy Toole (Manasquan, N.J./Manasquan) and Rob Moore (Ridge, N.Y./Longwood) started the inning with back-to-back walks before Hugg loaded the bases with a single to right center. Nick Cardamone (Freehold, N.J./Freehold Township) coaxed a bases loaded walk to force Toole home and Micak singled to right center to bring home Moore for the sixth run.

Wagner got the scoring started in the game with four runs in the first inning thanks to RBI singles by Nick Dini, Mazurkiewicz and Branden Benecke and a run-scoring double by Godino.

The four-run deficit didn't last long for Saint Peter's. Kyle Grimes (Iselin, N.J./JFK Memorial), Jon Kristoffersen (Jefferson, N.J./Jefferson Township) and Moore each walked to load the bases. With the Seahawks pitcher having control issues, Hugg waited for his pitch and launched a grand slam over the left field fence for his second homer of the season and to even the score at 4 in the bottom of the first. The Seahawks then scored seven times in the last five innings to earn the win.

Willie Krajnik (Lyndhurst, N.J./Saint Mary) took the loss for the Peacocks.

Saint Peter's returns to action on Wednesday at Saint Joseph's. Game time is 3:30 p.m.
