Saint Peter's Softball Drops Two Against Siena

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

JERSEY CITY, N.J. – Siena defeated Saint Peter's in a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference softball doubleheader on Sunday.

Nicole Olmedo (Chino, Calif. / Chino) and Lee Harrison (Las Vegas, Nev. / Coronado) paced the Peacocks (1-16, 0-4 MAAC) with three RBIs apiece. Nicole Feoli (Burlington Twp, N.J. / Burlington) recorded two hits, three runs scored and one RBI.

Paige Hess powered Siena (5-11, 2-0 MAAC) in the opening contest with four hits, three runs and seven RBIs, while Abby Carpenter collected two hits, three runs and six RBIs.

The first game of the doubleheader was an offensive outburst from both teams.

The Saints got on the board in the first inning, following a RBI base hit from Sammy Smaldone to score Stephanie Viggiano. Next at-bat, Hess doubled to left center, scoring two more runs for the 3-0 lead.

Saint Peter's responded in the bottom of the inning with two runs. Feoli reached base to lead off after being hit by a pitch. She would score on the next play as Kirsten Kelley (Seaford, N.Y. / General Douglas McArthur) hit a double to reach base and advance the runner. Next at-bat, Olmedo hit a RBI-double to score Kelley and cut the deficit.

Siena answered with five runs in the second inning. With bases loaded, Carpenter singled through the left side to score two runs. Two batters later, Hess hit a three-run homerun to centerfield to extend the lead, 8-2.

The Peacocks trimmed the margin in the bottom of the inning with three runs. Feoli singled through the left side to score Taylor Corretjer (Thiells, N.Y. / North Rockland). Following an out, Olmedo hit another RBI-double to score two runs and trail 8-5.

In the third inning, the Saints scored four runs, fueled by a RBI-single from Mulligan and a three-run double from Lloyd.

Saint Peter's did not go away, cutting the deficit with six runs in the fifth inning. With the bases loaded, Samantha Storms (Lake Geneva, Wis. / William Bay) drew a walk to advance the runner home. Francesca D'Amato (Lyndhurst, N.J. / Immaculate Conception) added a single up the middle to score two more runners. Later in the inning, Lee Harrison hit a three-run homerun to left field to only real 12-11.

Siena pulled away in the fifth inning, scoring eight runs. Alyssa Lancaster hit a RBI-single with the bases loaded to add a run. Next at-bat, Carpenter hit a grand slam to left field. Following a base hit, Hess hit a two-run blast to left field to secure the 20-11 victory.

The Peacocks' double digit scoring output is the first time the team has scored in double-figures since May 7, 2011.

The second game of the doubleheader did not feature as many runs scored like in the morning matchup.

Siena scored three runs in both the second and fifth innings to take a 6-0 lead.

The Peacocks attempted to rally back in the bottom of the seventh, scoring three runs. Harrison hit a RBI-double to score a runner and then a groundout from Candice Koch (Orland Park, Ill. / Carl Sandburg) advanced a runner home. Corretjer sacrifice bunted to first to score Harrison from third to cut the margin in half. A putout at first ended the rally, with Siena winning the 6-3 decision.

Saint Peter's returns to action on Apr. 4, when the team resumes non-conference play with a doubleheader at Wagner.
