Box Score JERSEY CITY, N.J. – Niagara downed Saint Peter's 11-2 in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) baseball action on Saturday. The second contest was postponed due to cold and windy conditions and has been rescheduled for Sunday starting at 11 a.m.
Sean Henry (Brick, N.J./Brick Township) paced the Peacocks (1-13, 1-3 MAAC) with a hit and an RBI while Jon Kristoffersen (Jefferson, N.J./Jefferson Township) added two hits in the loss.
Anthony Firenzi and Trevor McCauley each had two hits and three RBIs while Michael Furhman scored four runs for the Purple Eagles (4-13-1, 1-0 MAAC) in the winning effort.
Niagara scored nine runs in the first three innings en route to an 11-2 victory in the first game of a three-game series against Saint Peter's.
The Purple Eagles scored three times in the first inning despite only posting one hit in the frame.
McCauley got the scoring started with a two-run single up the middle before Nick Bernick coaxed a bases loaded walk to plate the third run of the inning.
Niagara added four runs in the second after Owen Dziados scored on an error on a failed pickoff attempt before Firenzi plated two runs on a double to right field and McCauley capped the four-run inning with a run-scoring double to right center for a 7-0 advantage.
Thomas Rodrigues and Firenzi added RBI singles in the third to increase the margin to 9-0.
The Peacocks got on the scoreboard in the sixth with a run. Mike Ionta (Westfield, N.J./Westfield) walked and moved to second on a wild pitch and then touched home on an error.
Saint Peter's then added a run in the seventh to trim the margin to 9-2. Jose Martinez (Brown Mills, N.J./Remberton Township) singled up the middle and came around to score on Henry's single to right center.
Niagara capped the day with two runs in the seventh on a Furhman RBI single to center before a second run touched home on an error for an 11-2 advantage.
Mike Doran (Ashbury, N.J./Saint Peter's Prep) took the loss for the Peacocks.
The series was originally scheduled for Bobo Field in Lewistown, N.Y., but the field was unplayable so the series moved to Jersey City. Despite playing on its home field, Saint Peter's was the road team.
The three-game series concludes on Sunday with a doubleheader starting at 11 a.m. The first game will consist of seven innings followed by a nine-inning affair.
