Box Score JERSEY CITY, N.J. – Quinnipiac defeated Saint Peter's 81-50 in a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference women's basketball contest on Sunday afternoon.
Sajanna Bethea (Levittown, Pa. / Pennsbury) paced Saint Peter's (2-18, 2-9 MAAC) with 12 points and six rebounds. Samantha Meier (Manalapan, N.J. / Manalapan) and Hala Mostafa (Cairo, Egypt / Modern Narmer Language School) finished with eight points apiece in the losing effort.
Samantha Guastella paced Quinnipiac (19-3, 11-0 MAAC) with 16 points, going 5-of-8 from the field. Jasmine Martin finished with 15 points while Val Driscoll tallied 14 rebounds in the win.
Quinnipiac used a strong second half to pull away from the Peacocks and remain undefeated in conference play.
The Bobcats outscored Saint Peter's 46-21 in the second half, going 7-for-18 from behind the arc.
Coming out of halftime with a 35-29 lead, Quinnipiac started the stanza on a 21-8 run to take a 56-37 lead with 11:46 left on the clock. The final minutes of the game became a free throw contest, as each team attempted 20 free throws.
Quinnipiac opened the game with a 7-2 run to hold the lead. The Peacocks cut into the deficit with an 8-2 run, capped off by a jumper from Bethea, to only trail 11-10. Following a 3-pointer from the Bobcats, Saint Peter's kept things close with a pair of charity tosses from Talah Hughes (Beacon, N.Y. / Beacon). The Bobcats held the lead with timely 3-point baskets throughout to take a 35-29 lead into halftime.
Alyssa Velles (Franklin, Conn. / Norwich Free Academy) and Antonia Smith (Bronx, N.Y. / Dwight School) posted six points each, while Rebecca Sparks (Teaneck, N.J. / Teaneck [Saint Francis]) tallied a team-high five assists.
Saint Peter's returns to action on Feb. 5 with an hOURglass rivalry matchup against Monmouth. Game time is set for 7 p.m.
