Box Score JERSEY CITY, N.J. – Ninth-seed Manhattan scored as time expired in regulation to defeat eighth-seed Saint Peter's 1-0 in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Tournament Opening Round on Friday.
Alex Shackley tapped in a shot after receiving a long pass from Dahrius Waldron and found the netting as time expired to help the Jaspers (4-10-2) advance to face top-seed Monmouth on Friday in the MAAC Quarterfinals. R.J. Noll made one save on the afternoon.
Jamie Cleland (Dunfermine, Scotland/Woodmill) made three saves for the Peacocks (7-9-1) while Luke Fairlamb (Northampton, England/Unity College) had a team-high six shots in the loss.
Saint Peter's had the heroics on its home field in the regular season meeting against Manhattan at Jaroschak Field to defeat Manhattan 2-1 in double overtime on a Jack Fisher (Leeds, England/Heckmondwike Grammer School) header. The Jaspers came away with the dramatic finish in the tournament.
Saint Peter's had nine shots on the day, but Fairlamb produced the only two shots on goal when Noll made a stop at 38:22 and then the junior had a shot blocked by the Manhattan defense at the 48-minute mark.
The match marked the end of the collegiate careers for Carlos Cartegna (Woodbridge, Va./Garfield) and Jack Pounce (Little Chafont. England/Dr. Challoner's Grammar). Cartegna had a goal and two assists for four points in his two seasons while Pounce posted a goal and seven assists for nine points in his four-years in Jersey City.
