Quinnipiac Edges Saint Peter's Women's Volleyball, 3-2

HAMDEN, Conn. – Quinnipiac edged Saint Peter's 3-2 in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) women's volleyball action on Sunday. The Bobcats won the match 20-25, 25-7, 26-24, 25-27 and 15-12.

Lauren Behrens (Frankfort, Ill./Lincoln-Way East) paced the Peacocks (2-12, 0-5 MAAC) with a double-double after registering 16 digs and 13 kills. Amanda Colombo (Wallington, N.J./Wallington) also had a double-double with 13 digs and 10 kills while Kaitlyn Sitton (Brush Praire, Wash./Praire) dished out 36 assists in the loss.

Saint Peter's rallied from being match-point down in the fourth set to winning four of the last five points to force a fifth and deciding set. The decisive spurt was fueled by kills from Behrens, Greta Varvell (San Jose, Calif./Branham) and Colombo to help Saint Peter's earn a 27-25 win in the set.

The Bobcats (2-14, 1-4 MAAC) then won the first two points of the final set and never trailed the rest of the way to come away with the five-set victory. The key run during the set was a 6-2 run with Quinnipiac holding a 6-4 lead that extended to 12-6 during that spurt on its way to a 15-11 win to clinch the match.

Jen Coffey paced the Bobcats with 13 kills while Elizabeth Kloos added 10 kills. Katie Urycki had a team-best 22 digs while Sierra Dawson and Kat Miller each chipped in 12 digs and Miller notched a double-double after also dishing out 21 assists.

The Peacocks opened the match with a 25-20 victory in the first set. With the set tied at 16, Saint Peter's scored three-straight points to take the advantage it would not relinquish. Quinnipiac cut the margin to 20-19 before the Peacocks tallied five of the final six points to take the first set. Behrens had two kills and Colombo added a kill and a service ace.

In the second set, the Bobcats took a 2-1 advantage to take the margin it would not relinquish. With Quinnipiac leading 3-2, the Bobcats scored the next eight points to take an 11-2 advantage. The host also used a 6-0 run in the set to even the match at a set apiece with a 25-7 second-set win.

Saint Peter's jumped out to a 10-3 lead in the third set powered by two service aces by Colombo. With the Peacocks holding a 16-9 edge, Quinnipiac went on a 10-2 spurt to take its first lead of the set at 19-18. Saint Peter's answered with the next six points to set up a set point for the visitors. The Bobcats then won the final seven points to pull out the third set, 26-24.

The fourth set was a seesaw battle between the two teams with neither team able to grab more than a three-point lead. Quinnipiac had a match point after a service error, but a Behren's kill staved off the match point and the Peacocks won the set 27-25. The Bobcats won the fifth and deciding set to end a two-game losing streak against Saint Peter's.

Varvell added 10 digs and five kills while Marlena Budna (Brooklyn, N.Y./Fort Hamilton) posted nine kills and seven digs for the Peacocks.

Saint Peter's returns to action at Iona on Saturday. Match time is 1 p.m.
