Cartegna Highlights Senior Day With First Saint Peter's Tally In 1-All Draw Against Siena

JERSEY CITY, N.J. – Carlos Cartegna (Woodbridge, Va./Garfield) scored his first goal in a Saint Peter's uniform to highlight senior day in a match that ended in a 1-all standstill against Siena in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) men's soccer action on Saturday.

Cartegna, who had two assists in his career in Jersey City coming into the match, knocked in his own rebound at the 22:38 mark to give the Peacocks (7-8-2, 4-5-1 MAAC) a 1-0 lead. Cartegna nearly was the hero in double overtime, but his shot grazed off the crossbar at the 106:26 mark.`

Cartegna and Jack Pounce (Little Chafont, England/Dr. Challoner's Grammar) were honored before the game. Pounce, who had two shots in the game, has one tally and seven assists for nine points in his four-year career.

Jamie Cleland (Dunfermine, Scotland/Woodmill) made a season-best seven saves in the match for Saint Peter's.

Alexander Tejera notched his third goal of the season off an assist for Nils Weddig in the 28th minute.

Both teams scored in a span of five minutes in the first half and then neither team could punch in the go-ahead goal in the final 83 minutes of the match to end in a draw.

Cartegna got the scoring started when his initial shot was stopped by the netminder, but went right back to Cartegna, who knocked in his own rebound for his first tally of the season at 22:38.

Saint Peter's held the lead for five minutes and 22 seconds until Weddig found the head of Tejera at 27:52 to even the match.

Cleland made five of his seven saves after the Saints tied the match, including three in the two overtime periods.

The best chance for either team came when Cartegna grazed the cross bar with three minutes and 34 seconds left in the second overtime.

Saint Peter's will open the MAAC Tournament in Disney on Thursday.
