Box Score POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. – Marist converted a pair of penalty kicks in the final three minutes and 58 seconds to down Saint Peter's 2-0 in a first-place showdown in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) men's soccer action on Saturday.
Jamie Cleland (Dunfermine, Scotland/Woodmill) made two saves for the Peacocks (5-4-1, 2-1-0 MAAC) and Ezequiel Cei (Elizabeth, N.J./Saint Benedicts) had a team-high four shots in the loss.
SimonLund Jorgensen and Cameron Harr each recorded goals for the Red Foxes (5-5-0, 3-0-0 MAAC) and Mark Rajovic turned away six shots in the winning effort.
The two teams battled to a scoreless standstill until the final four minutes of the match before Marist capitalized on two penalty-kick opportunities to earn the win and hand Saint Peter's its first conference loss of the season.
After a Red Foxes' player was tripped in the box, Jorgensen converted the PK opportunity at the 86:02 mark to give Marist the lead it would not relinquish. Harr then posted his seventh tally of the season on a penalty kick with 11 seconds left to seal the win.
The Peacocks did not register a shot in the final 28 minutes of the match. Cei gave the squad its final scoring threat when his shot was saved by Rajovic at the 71:19 mark.
The match was a battle between two of the four unbeaten teams in the league. The other two unbeaten teams Monmouth and Siena also were slated to square off on Saturday in West Long Branch.
The loss ended Saint Peter's four-game winning streak, the program's longest since 2010. Despite the loss, the Jersey City team has won two of its first three circuit games for the first time since 2010.
The Peacocks return to action on Wednesday at home against Manhattan. Match time is 3 p.m.
