Fairfield Edges Saint Peter's Men's Soccer, 2-1

FAIRFIELD, Conn. – Fairfield edged Saint Peter's 2-1 in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) men's soccer action on Wednesday.

Louis Mobbs (Hull, England/Sydney Smith) trimmed the margin to 2-1 when he found the back of the net off a cross to the center of the box from Jack Pounce (Little Chafont, England/Dr. Challoner's Grammar) with four minutes and 30 seconds left.

The Peacocks then (7-8-1, 4-5-0 MAAC) had a pair of shots in the final 93 seconds, but could not convert. Carlos Cartegna (Woodbridge, Va./Garfield) missed hit with 93 seconds left and Mobbs had the final scoring chance on the night sail high with 43 seconds left before the final horn sounded.

Mobbs now leads the team with seven goals for 14 points after posting five tallies in his first two years in Jersey City. The junior is tied for the team lead for points with Ezequiel Cei (Elizabeth, N.J./Saint Benedicts) and Luke Fairlamb (Northampton, England/Unity College) with 14 points. After not registering a point in the last two seasons, Pounce notched his second assist on the year and also has a goal for four points in 2015. Jamie Cleland (Dunfermine, Scotland/Woodmill) made one save in the loss.

Dominic Marshall posted a goal and an assist for the Stags (5-5-6, 4-3-2 MAAC) while Ben Wignall also found the twine and Matt Turner turned away two shots in the winning effort.

For the second-straight game, Saint Peter's fell behind by two goals at the intermission and rallied to score in the final frame only to come up short for the second-straight game with its loss at Fairfield.

Marshall won a 1-on-1 with the goalkeeper at the 14:19 mark to give the Stags a 1-0 lead. Marshall then had a shot stopped by Cleland, but Wignall was there for the put-back at 28:24 for a 2-0 lead.

With less than five minutes remaining in the match the Peacocks scored thanks to Mobbs second-straight game with a goal, but the Stags came away with the one-goal victory.

Saint Peter's concludes the regular season at home against Siena on Saturday. Prior to the match, the Peacocks will honor seniors Cartegna and Pounce. Saint Peter's currently sits tied for seventh in the league, but can move up to as high as fourth with a win against Saints. All 11 teams make the MAAC Championships in Florida.
