Saint Peter's Women's Volleyball Falls to Niagara

JERSEY CITY, NJ - Saint Peter's fell to Niagara 3-0 in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) women's volleyball action on Sunday.

Marlena Budna (Brooklyn, NY / Fort Hamilton) paced the Peahens with nine kills, three assists, and three digs. Lauren Brehnan (Frankfort, Ill. / Lincoln-Way East) tallied eight kills and eight digs while Greta Varvell (San Jose, CA / Branham) added seven kills and six digs. 

Alexis Gray of the Purple Eagles (6-12, 3-5 MAAC) achieved a double-double with four kills, 32 assists, and 11 digs. Melissa McGwin tallied 13 kills while Nicole Matheis added six kills and 11 digs. 

The score remained close in the first set until the Peahens (3-16, 1-8 MAAC) went on a 3-0 run, bringing the score to 6-4 with a kill from Lauren Brehnan, an attack error by MacKenzie Keating, and a service error by Melissa McGwin of Niagara. A service ace by Alexis Gray put Niagara in the lead. The Purple Eagles went on a 6-0 run later on, bringing the score to 23-16. A service error by Rylee Hunt stopped Niagara's run, but the Peacocks could not make a comeback at the end of the set. 

Niagara went on a 3-0 run early in the first set, bringing the score to 7-2. The Peacocks tried to close the gap, but fell short when Niagara went on a 3-0 run. A kill by Marlena Budna broke the run, but the Purple Eagles pulled far ahead with a 7-0 run, ending the set with a score of 25-11.

The Peacocks immediately went up 2-0 in the third set with a kill by Lauren Behren and an attack error by Alexis Gray of Niagara. The Purple Eagles then took the lead with a 3-0 run, bringing the score to 3-2. The Peahens closed the gap and took the lead with a kill by Marlena Budna, a service ace by Grace Varvell, leading to a 5-0 run and a score of 10-13. Niagara came back late in the set, going on a 5-0 run and keeping the lead, bringing the match to a final score of 25-23.

The Peahens will host the Manhattan Jaspers on Wednesday at 7pm.
