Box Score POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. – Marist defeated Saint Peter's 77-51 in a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) women's basketball contest on Saturday night.
Sajanna Bethea (Levittown, Pa. / Pennsbury) paced the Peacocks (1-17, 1-8 MAAC) with her second double-double of the season, posting 14 points and 12 rebounds. Talah Hughes (Beacon, N.Y. / Beacon) finished with nine points, seven rebounds and two steals in the loss.
Madeline Blais paced the Red Foxes (12-7, 8-2 MAAC) with 19 points on 6-of-10 shooting. Tori Jarosz tallied 16 points and eight rebounds while Allie Clement collected 13 points in the victory.
A strong first half from Marist gave the team a lead it would not relinquish en route to its eighth conference victory of the season.
Marist opened up the game hitting 6-of-9 from the field to take a 17-4 lead. Saint Peter's cut into the margin with back-to-back baskets from Bethea to trail by single digits. The Red Foxes countered with consecutive 3-pointers to take a 23-8 advantage with 9:25 left in the half.
Saint Peter's trimmed the deficit with two striaght field goals from Antonia Smith (Bronx, N.Y. / Dwight School) and Alyssa Velles (Franklin, Conn. / Norwich Free Academy). Marist extended its lead with five unanswered points to lead 28-12.
With the score 32-17 in favor of Marist, the Red Foxes finished the first off on a 15-2 run to take a 47-21 lead into halftime. Marist shot 17-of-31 from the field in the first half, including 6-of-10 from 3-point range.
Marist opened up the second half on a 17-5 run to take a 64-28 lead. Saint Peter's cut into the deficit with a 12-0 run, but the Red Foxes countered with a run of their own en route to a 77-51 victory.
Smith and Velles finished with eight points each, while Hala Mostafa (Cairo, Egypt / Modern Narmer Language School) collected seven points and eight rebounds.
Saint Peter's returns to action on Jan. 26, when the team completes its season-series against Rider. Game time is slated for 7 p.m.
