Box Score JERSEY CITY, N.J. – Canisius defeated Saint Peter's 57-45 in a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) women's basketball contest on Sunday afternoon.
Talah Hughes (Beacon, N.Y. / Beacon) paced the Peacocks (1-15, 1-6 MAAC) with 11 points on 4-of-6 shooting. Antonia Smith (Bronx, N.Y. / Dwight School) recorded 10 points, six rebounds and three assists while Sajanna Bethea (Levittown, Pa. / Pennsbury) collected a team-high 10 rebounds in the loss.
Crystal Porter paced the Golden Griffs (6-11, 4-4 MAAC) with 14 points, seven rebounds, three assists and two steals. Tiahana Mills tallied nine points, four rebounds, five assists and three steals in the win.
Second chance opportunities hurt the Peacocks, as Canisius scored 14 second chance points on 16 offensive rebounds to win its sixth game of the season.
The first half of action was back and forth, as both teams exchanged baskets in the early going. Trailing 12-8, the Peacocks went on a 7-0 run to take a 15-12 lead with 10:33 on the clock. The run was fueled by Hughes, who scored all seven points for the Peacocks. Canisius regained the lead with five straight points to take a 17-15 edge.
Knotted at 19 with 5:54 left, Canisius finished the half on an 8-2 run to take a 27-21 advantage into half time.
The Golden Griffs opened up a double-digit lead in the second half, beginning the stanza with an 11-4 run to take a 38-25 lead with 12:50 left on the clock.
Saint Peter's cut the lead to single digits following back-to-back three points from Smith and Alyssa Velles (Franklin, Conn. / Norwich Free Academy) to trail 44-38 with 9:03 remaining in the game. Canisius extended its lead back up to 10 with four straight charity tosses.
The Peacocks got within six one last time in the second half, but the Golden Griffs were able to outlast the Saint Peter's for the 57-45 victory.
Samantha Meier (Manalapan, N.J. / Manalapan) finished with six points and three rebounds, while Bridget Whitfield (San Diego, Calif. / La Costa Canyon) chipped in with five points, one rebound and one assist.
Saint Peter's wraps up a three-game home stand on Tuesday with a rematch against Fairfield. Game time is set for 7 p.m.
