Box Score LAWRENCEVILLE, N.J. – Rider defeated Saint Peter's 68-55 in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) men's basketball action on Saturday.
Marvin Dominique (Miramar, Fla./Miramar [Fordham]) paced the Peacocks (8-9, 2-4 MAAC) with 13 points and six rebounds in the loss.
Jimmie Taylor powered the Broncs (10-6, 4-1 MAAC) with 15 points while Matt Lopez and Zedric Sadler each posted 14 points in the winning effort.
Rider used a strong first half to jump out to the lead and a good start to the second half to earn the second-straight win against Saint Peter's in the second year of the hOURglass Rivalry.
With the game tied at 7, Rider went on a 15-6 run to grab a 22-13 advantage midway through the first half.
Xavier Lundy and Lopez started the spurt with consecutive layups for an 11-7 lead with 15:44 on the clock. After Quadir Welton (Philadelphia, Pa./Mat, Civics and Science Charter) scored in the lane, five-straight points from the Broncs increased the margin to seven points thanks to buckets by Lopez, Taylor and a free throw by Sadler.
Elias Desport (Stockholm, Sweden/Solna Gymnasium) dunked the ball to trim the margin to 16-11 only to see Taylor nail a 3-ball at 11:42. Desport then scored in the lane, but Tedddy Ofereafor nailed a triple for a 22-13 edge with 10:55 on the clock.
With the Broncs holding a 24-17 lead, Lundy scored four-straight points and Lopez converted a traditional 3-point play at 5:25 for a 31-17 lead.
The Peacocks cut the margin to 11 points with 28 seconds left after four points from Dominique and two from Tyler Gaskins (Roswell, Ga./Centennial [Lawson State]), but Sadler drained a deep 3-ball with two seconds left to give Rider a 39-25 lead going into the locker room.
In the second half, Saint Peter's started the stanza 2-for-15 from the floor while Rider continued to add to it lead, starting the stanza on a 20-9 run in the first 13 minutes of the period to take a 59-34 advantage. Taylor powered the spurt with seven points.
The Peacocks ended the final four minutes on a 13-2 run to set the final score to 68-55.
Desi Washington (Harrisburg, Pa./Central Dauphin [Delaware State]) posted six points, four rebounds, two assists and three steals in the loss. Washington, who has 1,377 career points between Saint Peter's and Delaware State, needs 15 points to become the 30th player in program history to reach the 1,000-point plateau.
Saint Peter's returns to action when it concludes its three-game road trip at Monmouth on Wednesday in its final hOURglass Rivalry road matchup. Game time is 7 p.m.
