Vogel's First Career Hat Trick Propels Saint Peter's Women's Soccer Past Canisius In MAAC Opener, 3-1

Box Score

JERSEY CITY, N.J. – Greta Vogel (Fountain Hills, N.J./Fountain Hills [Scottsdale Community College]) scored three times in a span of six minutes and 40 seconds to propel Saint Peter's past Canisius 3-1 in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) women's soccer opener for both teams on Thursday.

Vogel, a 2013 All-MAAC second-team selection, scored in the 77th, 79th and 84th minutes to notch a natural hat trick and her first three goals of the season. The senior now has posted six of her 10 career goals against the Golden Griffins after posting a tally in against the Buffalo program in 2012 and her first multi-goal performance of her career last season against Canisius after scoring two tallies in the regular season finale. Vogel became the first Peacock player to record a hat trick since Kyle Marsh found the twine three times in a 7-0 win against Delaware State on Sept. 15, 2005.

Naima Gustaffson (Jersey City, N.J./Saint Dominic Academy), who recorded her first collegiate assist against Yale on Tuesday, notched her second helper of the week by assisting on Vogel's game-winner.  Devon Williams (Neptune City, N.J./Neptune [New Jersey City]) recorded her first point in a Saint Peter's uniform after posting six goals and six assists at New Jersey City University in 2011-12. Lauren Solene (Fall City, Wash./Mount Si) made nine saves for the Peacocks (1-7-0, 1-0-0 MAAC) to earn her first collegiate win.

Savannah Jonathan posted the lone goal for the Golden Griffins (1-8-0, 0-1-0 MAAC) while Brigid St. Leger made four saves in the loss.

Behind the strong performance of Vogel, Saint Peter's erased a 1-0 deficit and scored three times in the second half to earn its first win in league play to open up the circuit with a win for the first time since 1999 and end a 10-game losing streak against Canisius.

Jonathan gave the Golden Griffins a 1-0 lead on an unassisted tally at 33:46.

The lead for Canisius would hold up for 43 minutes until Vogel decided to take over the game. The senior started her run when she took a through ball and raced down the field to find the back of the netting to even the match at 1 at 76:54.

The goal seemed to jump start the Peacocks' offensive attack. One minute and 20 seconds later, Gustaffson won a ball against a Canisius defender on the offensive attack and found the head of Vogel, who found the netting to give Saint Peter's the lead it would not relinquish.  The senior then completed her first career three-goal performance and a natural hat trick when she scored unassisted at the 83:34 mark to seal the victory.

Vogel had a sure-fire fourth goal in the closing minutes of the game, but an offsides call negated the opportunity.

After Vogel scored for the second time on the day, Solene made a pair of stops to help maintain the advantage when she thwarted attempts by Tara McPherson in the 80th minute and Mallory Illsley in the 81st minute.

The Peacocks won its first league game since stunning Marist 2-1 in double overtime on Oct. 21, 2012. The squad won its league opener for the first time since 1999 and the seventh time in team history.

Saint Peter's returns to action on Wednesday at Delaware State. Game time is 3:30 p.m.
