Box Score 2 HAMDEN, Conn. – Quinnipiac swept a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) baseball doubleheader on Saturday. The Bobcats rallied from a two-run margin in both contests to take a 5-2 decision in the opener and a 9-2 victory in the nightcap.
Jon Kristoffersen (Jefferson, N.J./Jefferson Township) paced the Peacocks (10-24, 5-8 MAAC) with three hits and two runs scored. Jim Smith (Hatfield, Pa./North Penn) added three hits and Rob Moore (Ridge, N.Y./Longwood) posted two hits and a run scored while Chris Hugg (Ironia, N.J./Randolph) and Nick Henriquez (Paramus, N.J./Paramus) each added a hit and an RBI on the afternoon.
Mike Blumenthal powered Quinnipiac (14-16, 9-3 MAAC) with four hits, three RBIs and two runs scored while Lou Iannotti added three hits, four RBIs and two runs scored. Mike Palladino posted three hits, two runs scored and three RBIs and Vincent Guglietti registered four hits, two RBIs and a run scored for the Bobcats on the day.
Trailing 2-0 in the third in the opener, Quinnipiac scored three times in the bottom of the stanza en route to five unanswered runs to help the Bobcats to a 5-2 victory.
Quinnipiac rallied to take the lead thanks to three-straight RBI base hits. Iannotti smacked a double down the right field line before Guglietti tied the game with a single to left field and Rob Pescitelli gave the Bobcats the one-run lead on a single up the middle.
Pescetelli was hit with a pitch in the fifth and came around to score on an error to increase the Bobcats lead to 4-2. Palladino sealed the opening game win with a sacrifice fly in the eighth for the 5-2 victory.
Saint Peter's jumped out to an early lead on the day with a run in the first. Kristoffersen singled through the right side to led off the game and moved to second when Moore walked before Hugg plated Kristoffersen with an RBI single through the left side. Smith followed with a single to center field with one out, but Quinnipiac got of the jam only allowing one run thanks to a double play.
Kristoffersen was the catalyst for the Peacocks second run of the afternoon in the third. The sophomore singled to center, moved to second on Moore's bunt single and to third on Hugg's fielder's choice before touching home on a failed pick off attempt at third to give Saint Peter's a 2-0 edge. The Bobcats then scored the final five runs to come away with the win in the first-ever conference meeting between the two teams.
Zach Hopf (Woodbridge, N.J./Woodbridge), the current MAAC Pitcher of the Week, took the loss after allowing four runs (three earned) on 11 hits with two strikeouts.
Just like the opener, Saint Peter's grabbed a 2-0 lead only to see Quinnipiac come back with five runs to take the advantage en route to a 9-2 victory in the second game.
Trailing 2-0 in the nightcap in the first inning, the Bobcats put a five spot in their portion of the frame to take a 5-2 lead.
Iannotti smacked a three-run homer before Guglietti followed with a solo shot and Blumenthal capped the five-run outburst with an RBI double to right field for a 5-2 lead.
Blumenthal added an RBI singles in the third and fifth to increase the advantage to 7-2. Following Blumenthal's RBI single, Palladino smacked a two-run single to center in the fifth to make it a 9-2 contest.
The Peacocks jumped out to a 2-0 lead for the second time on the afternoon after scoring twice in the first.
Kristoffersen started the game being hit with a pitch before Moore doubled to right center to put runners on second and third. Smith plated Kristoffersen on an RBI single to left field before Henriquez scored Moore on an RBI fielder's choice for the two-run margin. Quinnipiac then scored the final nine runs of the nightcap to earn the victory.
Mark Wilson (Clark, N.J./Arthur L. Johnson) took the loss for Saint Peter's in the second game.
The two teams complete the three-game series on Sunday at 12 p.m. John Leiter (Toms River, N.J./Toms River South) takes the mound for the Peacocks.
