Dominique Helps Men's Basketball Rally From 14-Point Halftime Margin To A 61-50 Win Against Monmouth

Box Score

JERSEY CITY, N.J. – Marvin Dominique (Miramar, Fla./Miramar [Fordham]) scored 16 of his 20 points in the second half to help Saint Peter's rally from a 14-point halftime deficit in a 61-50 come-from-behind victory against Monmouth in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) men's basketball action on Sunday.

After going 2-for-5 in the first half, Dominique went 7-for-10 from the floor in the second half and made both of his 3-pointer attempts in the final frame. For the second-straight game the junior registered the go-ahead basket after drilling his second trey of the day with 4:02 remaining in the contest to give the Peacocks the lead they would not relinquish. Dominique, who slammed home the go-ahead basket in a 66-53 win against Siena on Friday, recorded his ninth 20-point performance this season. The junior also had six rebounds, four blocks, two assists and one steal on the afternoon.

Desi Washington (Harrisburg, Pa./Central Dauphin [Delaware State]) added 17 points for Saint Peter's (9-14, 5-9 MAAC) while Chris Burke (Willingboro, N.J./Willingboro) posted nine points and seven rebounds in the winning effort.

Andrew Nicholas paced the Hawks (10-15, 4-10 MAAC) with 16 points and Deon Jones chipped in 15 points and nine rebounds in the loss.

After a tough shooting first half, the Peacocks rallied from a double-digit deficit and closed the game out in the final four minutes of the contest for its second-straight win. Saint Peter's is now 3-4 in league play at the Yanitelli Center and after a short two-game road trip will end the season with three of its last four in Jersey City.

A 21-7 run to start the second half erased a 30-16 halftime deficit and tied the game at 37 with 8:34 left. Washington had six points and Tyler Gaskins (Roswell, Ga./Centennial [Lawson State]) added five points in the spurt.

The two teams then jockeyed for the lead over the next four minutes. Tyrone O'Garro scored in the lane at 4:26 to give Monmouth its final lead at 45-43. Dominique then turned the advantage back over to the Peacocks with a trey at 4:02 to start a 9-0 run.

Burke scored the next four points after Dominique's triple on two free throws at 3:25 and a layup 20 seconds later before Dominique capped the spurt with a layup with 2:25 remaining.

The Hawks were able to trim the margin to 54-50 after a Jones dunk with 62 seconds left, but Washington helped Saint Peter's seal the victory with a 7-0 run after going 6-for-6 from the charity stripe in the final 57 seconds.

The Peacocks jumped out to a quick 10-4 lead in the first six minutes and eight seconds of the first half thanks to five points from Washington.

With Saint Peter's holding a 12-9 margin, Monmouth went on a 15-0 run to grab a 24-12 lead with 3:40 left in the half. Jones sparked the run with seven points. The Peacocks were held without a basket for seven minutes and 35 seconds before Dominique halted the skid with a jumper with 3:12 remaining, but the Hawks went into the locker room with a 30-16 advantage.

After going 1-for-11 from behind the arc in the first half, Saint Peter's started the second half by making its first four triples to help deplete most of the 14-point halftime deficit.

Washington started the stanza with a trey at 19:06 before Burke (18:27) and Dominique (16:25) followed with treys of their own and then Washington capped the 3-point show with his second of the half at 15:41 to trim the margin to 30-28. Chris Brady halted the 12-0 run with a free throw at 14:37.

Dominique made it a one-point game with 14:25 left before Jones made two at the line at 14:04 and O'Garro recorded a put-back at 13:17 to restore a five-point lead at 35-30.

Gaskins then had five points and Elias Desport (Stockholm, Sweden/Solna Gymnasium) helped the Peacocks go on a 7-2 run to even the score at 37 with 8:34 left.

Neither team could take more than a basket advantage over the next four minutes until Dominique gave Saint Peter's the lead for good on a 3-pointer to help the Peacocks close the final 4:02 of the game on an 18-5 run to earn its first win at the Yanitelli Center in the Hourglass Rivalry.

Trevis Wyche (Neptune, N.J./Saint Peter's Prep) stuffed the stat sheet with six points, seven rebounds, three rebounds and two steals in the winning effort.

Saint Peter's has now rallied from a 14-point deficit and a 17-point margin this year after coming back from 17 down against Fairfield in a 56-55 win on Jan. 8 on the road.

This was the first meeting between the two teams in MAAC play in program history and the first tilt between the two schools since the Peacocks downed the Hawks 58-34 on Nov. 17, 2009 at 6 a.m. during the ESPN 24-hour basketball marathon. The home team now has won the last eight meetings dating back to the 2003-04 season.

Saint Peter's returns to action at Iona on Wednesday night. Game time is 7 p.m.
