Box Score JERSEY CITY, N.J. – Canisius defeated Saint Peter's, 56-43, in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) play on Thursday night.
Kaydine Bent (Bronx, N.Y./Harry S. Truman) recorded her 10th double-double of the season, notching 11 points and 10 rebounds. Antonia Smith (Bronx, N.Y./Dwight School) finished with 10 points in the loss.
Kayla Hoohuli led the way for the Golden Griffs, recording 16 points. Jamie Ruttle chipped in with 10 points and five boards in the Canisius victory.
Following a competitive first half, Canisius used a second half run to control the game and hold on for the victory.
With the game tied at six in the first half, the Golden Griffs went on an 8-3 run to take a 14-9 advantage. Following a Canisius turnover, Aziza May (South Euclid, Ohio/Charles F. Brush) drilled a 3-pointer with 12:43 left in the first half to cut the deficit to only one basket. Canisius answered with back-to-back field goals to extend its lead.
Saint Peter's countered with five straight points from Bent to trim the Canisius lead to one point. Ruttle knocked down consecutive baskets to give Canisius a 22-17 lead. The Peacocks responded with a basket from Bent. Following a pair of free throws from the Golden Griffs, Saint Peter's made consecutive field goals to only trail Canisius, 24-23. Both teams exchanged free throws in the final two minutes of the first half; with Canisius taking a 26-24 lead into halftime.
Canisius pulled away in the second half, going on a 17-5 run to take a 43-29 advantage. Saint Peter's did not go away, countering with an 18-4 run to only trail, 47-41 with 6:47 to go.
Saint Peter's was not able to build off the momentum, as the Golden Griffs finished the game on a 9-2 run to hold on for the 56-43 victory.
May finished with nine points in the contest for the Peacocks. Hala Mostafa (Cairo, Egypt/Modern Narmer Language School) recorded a team-high three assists.
With the loss, Saint Peter's falls to 3-23 overall and 2-15 in MAAC play. Canisius improves to 11-15 overall and completes the season sweep of the Peacocks.
Saint Peter's returns to action Feb. 22 when they travel up to Quinnipiac University. Game time is set for 2 p.m.
