Dominique-Welton Tandem Surges Saint Peter's Men's Basketball Past Boston University, 70-59

BOSTON, Mass. – Marvin Dominique (Miramar, Fla./Miramar [Fordham]) and Quadir Welton (Philadelphia, Pa./Math, Civics and Science Charter) combined for 38 points and 18 rebounds to power Saint Peter's past Boston University 70-59 in non-conference men's basketball action on Saturday.

Dominique posted 19 of his 22 points in the first half to match his season high for points. The senior went 7-for-10 from the floor, 5 of 8 from behind the arc and 3 of 3 from the foul line. Dominique added 10 rebounds for his third double-double this season and 15th of his career while registering his second 20-point game this year and 12th of his career.

Welton matched his career high of 16 points for the third time in his career and for the second time this season after posting 16 points in the season-opener against Brown on Nov. 14. Welton went perfect from the floor after hitting all seven shots while hitting 2 of 6 from the foul line. The sophomore added eight rebounds.

Trevis Wyche (Neptune, N.J./Saint Peter's Prep) added seven points and a career-high 10 assists. Wyche becomes the first Peacocks (3-6) player to register 10 helpers in a game since Keydren Clark against Marist on Jan. 25, 2006.

Tyler Gaskins (Roswell, Ga./Centennial [Lawson State]) and Travis Hester (Crozet, Va./The Miller School [Harcum CC]) each added nine points to help Saint Peter's end a six-game losing streak against the Terriers (1-5) and post the squad's first win against Boston University since 1980.

Eric Fanning paced the Terriers with 17 points while Cedric Hankerson added 15 points and Nathan Dieudonne chipped in 10 points in the second half in the loss.

The Peacocks used a strong first half to jump out to a 20-point lead at the break and despite a furious comeback attempt by Boston University the Jersey City team earned the win to end a two-game losing streak.

Saint Peter's used a 22-9 run in the first half to take a 23-9 advantage.

Trailing 7-4, Wyche started a 10-0 run with a layup at 17:14 before Dominique drained a trey at 16:36. Welton then scored in the lane before Dominique hit another triple at 15:24 for a 14-7 advantage.

Hankerson momentarily halted the Peacocks run with two free throws at 14:37 only to see Saint Peter's roll off the next nine points for a 23-9 margin.

Hester came off the bench to hit consecutive 3's at 14:00 and 13:19 before Dominique capped the spurt with a traditional 3-point play at 12:14 for a 14-point lead. During the 22-9 run, the Terriers were held without a field goal for seven minutes and 10 seconds.

The Peacocks never saw its lead dwindle below 11 points in the stanza. Holding a 29-18 lead, Saint Peter's closed the half with a 12-3 run to go into the locker room with a 41-21 advantage.

Dominique opened this run with a 3-pointer at 4:53 before Welton scored in the lane at 3:04. After Fanning hit 1 of 2 at the line, Dominique nailed another shot from downtown at 2:15 for a 37-19 lead. Hankerson hit two charity tosses at 1:58 only to see Dominique drain a jumper at 1:19 and a two free throws with 48.8 seconds left for a 20-point lead at the break.

Saint Peter's started the second half by scoring the first two baskets to take a 46-32 lead after a Welton layup and a Dominique trey with 19:10 left.

The Terriers used a 13-2 run in the second half to trim the margin to 53-39 with 11:23 left thanks to five points from Dieudonne. Jamel Fields (Albany, N.Y./Cheshire Academy [Fairfield]) and Hester answered with a layup and 3-pointer, respectively to restore a 19-point lead.

Boston University scored 20 of the final 32 points, but the Peacocks came away with the victory.

Saint Peter's returns to action on Wednesday at home against Princeton. The game is the second part of a doubleheader and will start at 8 p.m. Saint Peter's athletics will also be holding a toy drive and ask fans to bring a new or gently used toy for donation. All donations will go to the Captain Mark Lee Angel Giving Tree, which will provide toys for 313 underprivileged children.
