Box Score JERSEY CITY, N.J. – Lafayette defeated Saint Peter's 49-34 in a non-conference women's basketball contest on Sunday afternoon.
Hala Mostafa (Cairo, Egypt / Modern Narmer Language School) paced the Peacocks (0-10) with eight points and seven rebounds. Talah Hughes (Beacon, N.Y. / Beacon) tallied seven points and four rebounds in the losing effort.
Emily Horan paced the Leopards (7-4) with 21 points on 8-of-16 shooting. Anna Ptasinski finished with eight points while Ashley Lutz recorded a game-high nine rebounds in the victory.
Lafayette used a late first half run to pull away and not look back for its seventh victory of the season.
Saint Peter's opened up with a 6-2 advantage, fueled by back-to-back baskets off assists from Teresa Corchado (Willingboro, N.J. / Camden Catholic). Lafayette knotted the game at 6 with 14:33 remaining on the clock following consecutive field goals.
The Peacocks regained the lead with a bucket from Mostafa at 14:09 to take the 8-6 lead. The Leopards came right back down the court to score a basket and tie the game at 8.
After exchanging hoops to tie the game at 16, the Leopards finished the half on a 5-0 over the final 2:10 to take a 21-16 edge heading into the locker room.
Lafayette opened up the second half with a layup from Linnel Macklin to extend its lead, 23-16. Saint Peter's stopped the scoring drought at the 19:27 mark with a field goal from Bridget Whitfield (San Diego, Calif. / La Costa Canyon).
The Leopards took a 27-18 lead following back-to-back scores from Horan at 19:00 and 17:35. Following a layup from Kaycee Devoogd (Edison, N.J. / New Providence) to cut into the margin, Lafayette scored six unanswered points to open up a double-digit advantage.
Following a basket from Saint Peter's to trail 33-22, Lafayette went on a 10-1 run, capped off by a 3-pointer from Ptasinski, to hold a 43-23 lead. Alyssa Velles (Franklin, Conn. / Norwich Free Academy) nailed a 3-pointer at 5:16 to cut into the deficit, but the Leopards answered with a free throw from Horan to extend the advantage.
After a made field goal from Mostafa, Ptasinki drilled another trey at the 2:51 mark to take a 47-28 advantage en route to the 49-34 victory.
Velles finished with five points and two rebounds, while Antonia Smith (Bronx, N.Y. / Dwight School) tallied four points. Corchado, Rebecca Sparks (Teaneck, N.J. / Teaneck [Saint Francis]) and Samantha Meier (Manalapan, N.J. / Manalapan) each recorded two assists.
Saint Peter's returns to action on Jan. 2, when the team resumes MAAC play with a hOURglass rivalry matchup against Rider. Game time is 1 p.m.
