Siena Edges Saint Peter's Men's Soccer In MAAC Opener, 1-0

LOUNDONVILLE, N.Y. – Siena scored in the 51st minute to down Saint Peter's men's soccer 1-0 in its Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) opener on Saturday.

David Giddings (Newburgh, N.Y./Newburgh Free Academy) posted two saves for the Peacocks (2-7-0, 0-1-0 MAAC) while Luke Fairlamb (Northampton, England/Unity College), the current MAAC Player of the Week, had a team-high six shots in the loss.

David Itoafa posted the tally for the Saints (6-5-0, 1-1-0 MAAC) and Josh Weiss made seven saves in the winning effort.

Siena scored early in the second half and held on to give Saint Peter's the loss in the league opener after the Peacocks ended the 2013 on a high note with a 2-1 win against the Saints in the season finale.

Itoafa scored unassisted when he scored by hitting the top-right netting on a free kick from five-yards out at the 50:22 mark.

Saint Peter's had several scoring chances in the match, but could not convert. After Siena scored, the Peacocks had three scoring chances thwarted by Weiss. Marcel Maddee' (Berlin, Germany/Villa Elizabeth Gymnasium) had his shot stopped in the 71st minute and again in 74th minute while Santiago Mateus (Morristown, N.J./Morristown) had a scoring chance blocked on the ensuing kick after the stop. Fairlamb had his shot turned away by Weiss in the 80th minute and Mateus missed high in the squad's final scoring opportunity of the afternoon in the 81st minute.

Saint Peter's returns to action when the squad welcomes Fairfield to Jaroschak Field in the league home opener on Wednesday. Match time is 3 p.m.
