Box Score

NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. – Iona scored in the 87th minute to down Saint Peter's 4-3 in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) men's soccer action on Wednesday.

The Peacocks (2-10, 0-4 MAAC) stormed back with a furious comeback to tie the game at 3 after going down 3-0 in the first 25 minutes of the match. Luke Fairlamb (Northampton, England/Unity College) scored twice in the second half and Michael Crentsil (Newark, N.J./Saint Benedict's) notched his first goal and assist to aid in the comeback to even the score at 3.

Trailing 3-0 at halftime, Crentsil knocked in a rebound off a Marcel Maddee' (Berlin, Germany/Villa Elizabeth Gymnasium) free kick at 49:36 for his first career goal. The freshman then set up Fairlamb from 18-yards out at 51:13 to trim the margin to 3-2. Fairlamb tied the game at 3 when he knocked in a free kick at 82:25. Saint Peter's did not register a shot after tying the game.

The game was tied for a little over four minutes before Marcos Nunez found the back of the net off a feed from Luis Mendoza at 86:52 to regain the lead at 4-3 and thwart the Peacocks' furious comeback attempt.

Nunez paced the Gaels (7-4-2, 4-1-0 MAAC) with two goals and an assist while Ignacio Maganto posted two goals and Tyler Pinho dished out two assists in the winning effort.

It was all Iona in the first half to jump out to a 3-0 lead before Saint Peter's came roaring back to tie the match late in the second half only to see the Gaels find the back of the net in the waning minutes of the game to earn the victory.

Nunez got the scoring started on the afternoon when he found the twine off helpers from Pinho and Michael Holzer at 16:59 for a 1-0 lead.

Maganto then scored the next two tallies to give Iona the three-goal at the break. He scored unassisted at 22:26 and then found the back of the net off feeders from Nunez and Pinho at 24:08.

Saint Peter's then scored three times in the second half, but Nunez posted the decisive score for Iona in the 87th minute.

David Giddings (Newburgh, N.Y./Newburgh Free Academy) made seven saves for the Peacocks while Jacobo Aparicio and Julian Petrello each had a stop in 45 minutes of action for Iona.

Saint Peter's returns to action on Saturday at home against Marist. Match time is 2 p.m.
