Box Score JERSEY CITY, N.J. – Rider used a great shooting night to down Saint Peter's 71-53 in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) men's basketball action on Friday.
Desi Washington (Harrisburg, Pa./Central Dauphin [Delaware State]) paced the Peacocks (7-13, 3-8 MAAC) with 15 points. Marvin Dominique (Miramar, Fla./Miramar [Fordham]) and Trevis Wyche (Neptune, N.J./Saint Peter's Prep) each added 12 points in the loss.
The Broncs (11-9, 7-4 MAAC) connected on 27 of its 58 shots from the floor and made a season-high 13 baskets from behind the arc on 24 attempts. Anthony Myles paced the team with 19 points. Shawn Valentine added 13 points and seven rebounds off the bench and Jimmie Taylor chipped in 12 points and seven boards in the winning effort.
The Broncs took the lead in the first half and never looked back to earn the season-series split and take the first-ever Hourglass Rivalry game at the Yanitelli Center. The Hourglass Rivalry is between the three MAAC schools that reside in New Jersey (Monmouth, Rider and Saint Peter's) and encompasses all sports that the three schools promote. The rivalry gets its namesake since all three institutions are about an hour away from each other.
With the score tied at 9, Rider went on a 21-7 run to take a 30-16 lead with 7:41 remaining. Daniel Stewart started the run that gave the Broncs the advantage it would not relinquish on a trey with 12:47 left in a spurt that saw six different Broncs players register a basket.
Rider extended its lead to 15 points with 3:09 left in the first half before the Peacocks scored the final seven points of the half to trim the margin to 37-29 going into the locker room. Wyche hit a trey at 2:43, Washington scored in the lane at 1:10 and Tyler Gaskins (Roswell, Ga./Centennial [Lawson State]) nailed a jumper with 29 ticks left to cap the seven unanswered points.
Dominique started the second half with a jumper to cut the deficit to six points with 19:06 left with the score 37-31, but Taylor scored the next four points to restore a double-digit lead.
Washington hit a pair of 3's sandwiched in between a Myles trey to make it a seven-point game with 15:41 left, but Valentine nailed a 3-pointer with 12:53 and Saint Peter's could get no closer the rest of the way.
The Peacocks return to action at Manhattan on Monday. Game time is 7 p.m.
