POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. – Marist used a strong second half to rally past Saint Peter's 70-63 in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) men's basketball action on Monday.
Marvin Dominique (Miramar, Fla./Miramar [Fordham]) paced the Peacocks (7-10, 3-5 MAAC) with 21 points and 12 rebounds. It was the junior's eighth 20-point performance this season and his eighth double-double.
Trevis Wyche (Neptune, N.J./Saint Peter's Prep) added 13 points while Chris Burke (Willingboro, N.J./Willingboro) recorded 12 points and Desi Washington (Harrisburg, Pa./Central Dauphin [Delaware State]) chipped in 11 points in the loss.
Adam Kemp fueled the Red Foxes (6-12, 3-5 MAAC) with 18 points and 11 rebounds. Khalid Hart added 15 points, Chavaughn Lewis registered 14 points and T.J. Curry chipped in 10 points in the winning effort.
Marist rallied from a nine-point deficit in the second half and took the lead in the final eight minutes and held on to end Saint Peter's three-game winning streak.
After Wyche tied the game with two free throws at 7:49, Curry answered right back for the Red Foxes with a trey 27 seconds later to give Marist the lead it would not relinquish.
Dominique and Kemp then traded free throws before Hart nailed a triple at 6:17 to start a 7-0 run. Lewis then scored with a tip-in at 5:31 and Kemp dunked the ball for a 10-point lead at 59-49 with 5:09 left.
With the Red Foxes holding a nine-point margin, Wyche tried to bring the Peacocks back with six points in the final minute and a Burke layup with 27 seconds left cut the deficit to 67-63. Curry and Lewis made 3 of 4 at the line to seal the victory in the final 25 seconds.
Marist scored six of the first 11 points on the night before Saint Peter's went on a 16-6 run to take an 18-12 lead midway through the first half.
Dominique started the run with a jumper at 16:46 before Burke nailed a trey at 16:18 for a 10-6 edge. After Curry converted a traditional 3-point play at 15:55, Burke converted an alley-oop pass from Wyche for a dunk at 15:36 and then drilled a triple 25 seconds later for a 14-9 advantage.
Jay Bowie answered for the Red Foxes with a trey at 14:54 only to see Quadir Welton (Philadelphia, Pa./Math, Science and Civics Charter) and Washington score in the lane for a six-point edge.
With the Peacocks holding a 21-14 lead, Marist scored the next five points to make it a two-point game with 7:20 on the clock thanks to three points from Kemp and a layup from Hart.
Saint Peter's then went 4-for-4 from the charity stripe thanks to a pair of free throws from Dominique and Washington for a 25-19 lead with 5:20 on the clock and the Peacocks went into the locker room with the same six-point margin at 31-25.
The Peacocks extended its lead to nine points after a Washington 3-pointer to start the second half with 18:54 left. The 34-25 lead was the largest for the Peacocks and that was also when Marist started to make a comeback.
The Red Foxes used an 8-0 run to trim the margin to 34-333 with 16:08 remaining. Elias Desport (Stockholm, Sweden/Solna Gymnasium) and Dominique responded with baskets in the paint to restore a five-point lead a minute later.
After a Kemp jumper and a Lewis free throw, Washington handed Saint Peter's a 40-36 lead with 13:36 left. Marist used an 11-2 run to grab a 47-43 lead after a Bowie 3-ball at 9:47.
Dominique hit a jumper and Wyche made two free throws to tie the game, but Curry drained a triple and the Red Foxes went on a 12-4 run to take the lead for good en route to the 70-63 victory.
The three-game conference winning streak was the Peacocks longest since winning three consecutive during the 2010-11 season.
Saint Peter's returns to action when the squad completes its three-game road trip at Siena on Thursday. Game time is 7 p.m.
