Box Score JERSEY CITY, N.J. – The Saint Peter's women's basketball team fell to Quinnipiac University, 71-40, in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference competition.
Aziza May (South Euclid, Ohio/Charles F. Brush) recorded a team-high 11 points in the contest. Kaydine Bent (Bronx, N.Y./Harry S. Truman) fell just short of a double-double, with eight points and nine rebounds.
In the first half, Quinnipiac opened with a 14-0 run fueled by four straight baskets from Nikoline Ostergaard. The Peacocks responded with a jumper from Antonia Smith (Bronx, N.Y./Dwight School) to begin a 7-0 run to cut the deficit in half. Quinnipiac answered with seven consecutive points to take a 24-7 lead.
Following a Quinnipiac miss, Teresa Corchado (Willingboro, N.J./Camden Catholic) made a layup to trim the deficit. The Bobcats countered with four straight points to extend its lead. Saint Peter's answered with a field goal from Bent. Following a Quinnipiac miss and foul, Smith knocked down both free throws to cut the deficit. The Bobcats answered with a pair of free throws to take a 30-13. Kylie Garrett (Mt. Orab, Ohio/Western Brown) nailed a jump shot with one second remaining in the first half to go into the locker room down, 30-15.
Following a made field goal from Jasmine Martin to begin the half, the Peacocks started the second half on a 6-0 to cut the deficit to 11. With Quinnipiac out in front 32-21, the Bobcats hit consecutive 3-pointers to extend its lead, 38-21. Saint Peter's answered with a jumper from May to cut the lead. The Bobcats countered with another 3-ball from Martin to maintain a 41-23 advantage. Following the teams exchanging a free throw and a 3-pointer from Garrett, three straight points from Brittany McQuain gave Quinnipiac a 47-27 lead.
The Peacocks responded with another field goal from Garrett to cut the deficit. Quinnipiac countered with a layup from Ostergaard to extend its lead. Saint Peter's answered with three straight points to trim the deficit. A layup from McQuain began a 15-1 run for the Bobcats to take a 64-33 lead.
Saint Peter's responded with a trey from May and a free throw from Hala Mostafa (Cairo, Egypt/Modern Narmer Language School) to cut the Bobcat lead. The Bobcats countered with a 6-3 run to win the contest, 71-40.
Garrett and Smith finished with seven points each for the Peacocks. Mostafa finished with five rebounds.
The Bobcats finished with two players in double-figures, including a game-high 20 points from Martin.
With the loss, Saint Peter's falls to 3-13 overall and 2-5 in MAAC play. Quinnipiac improves to 10-8 overall and 5-3 in conference play.
Saint Peter's returns to action Jan. 18, when they welcome Rider University to the Yanitelli Center.
