Men's Basketball Defeats Quinnipiac On Hall of Fame Day, 74-67

JERSEY CITY, N.J. – Chris Burke (Willingboro, N.J./Willingboro), Marvin Dominique (Miramar, Fla./Miramar [Fordham]) and Trevis Wyche (Neptune, B.J./Saint Peter's Prep) combined for 51 points to lift Saint Peter's past Quinnipiac 74-67 in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) men's basketball action on Sunday.

Burke posted nine points in each half and shot 6-for-8 from floor, including 2 of 2 from behind the arc and 4-for-4 from the charity stripe to match his career high of 18 points. Dominique recorded 10 of his 17 points in the second half and finished the contest with 17 points, six rebounds and a career-high five blocks. Wyche finished the game with a career-high 16 points and helped jump start the Peacocks (6-9, 2-4 MAAC) offense with seven points in the first seven minutes to give the host an 11-2 advantage.

Desi Washington (Harrisburg, Pa./Central Dauphin [Delaware State]) was clutch down the stretch at the free throw line, finishing with nine of his 14 points from the charity stripe. Quadir Welton (Philadelphia, Pa./Math, Civics and Science Charter) hauled in 11 rebounds in the winning effort.

Ousmane Drame fueled the Bobcats (9-6, 4-2 MAAC) with 17 points and 14 rebounds. Ike Azotam tallied 16 points and 14 rebounds, Zaid Hearst also scored 16 points and Kasim Chandler chipped in 12 points in the loss off the bench.

In the first conference meeting between the two teams and the first battle since 1956-57, Saint Peter's lead game wire-to-wire to earn its third win against Quinnipiac and its second-straight league victory.

The Peacocks started the game on an 11-2 run in the first six minutes and 23 seconds of the game. Washington got the scoring started with a jumper at 19:13 before Wyche and Burke scored in the lane, respectively, at 17:45 and 15:56 to force a Bobcats timeout.

Drame answered with a jumper at 15:39, but Wyche scored the next five points courtesy of a trey at 14:19 and two free throws at 13:37 for an 11-2 advantage.

Quinnipiac cut the margin to four after an Umar Shannon trey at 11:29, but then Saint Peter's went on an 8-2 spurt to claim its first double-digit lead at 21-11 with 8:06 left in the first half. Dominique and Tyler Gaskins (Roswell, Ga./Centennial [Lawson State]) each had a 3-ball and Elias Desport (Stockholm, Sweden/Solna Gymnasium) made two free throws in the run.

The Bobcats scored consecutive baskets to trim the margin to six points, but Burke powered a 9-4 outburst with five points to restore a double-digit lead and help the Peacocks go into the locker room with a 32-20 advantage.

Quinnipiac started the second half on an 8-2 run to cut the margin to 34-28 with 15:01 remaining thanks to four points apiece from Drame and Azotam.

With the Peacocks holding a 38-32 lead, Saint Peter's went on an 11-4 run to take its largest lead at 49-36 with 9:46 remaining. The run was sparked by 3-pointers by Dominique Burke and Washington.

The Bobcats cut it to single digits twice in the next four minutes, but Wyche scored in the lane with 5:01 to restore the 10-point advantage that would hold until the final 90 seconds, but the Peacocks came away with the 74-67 victory.

Saint Peter's made 22 of its 26 free throw attempts.

The Peacocks won consecutive league games for the first time since 2010-11.

Saint Peter's returns to action when the team starts a three-game road trip at Rider on Thursday. Game time is 7 p.m.
