Newark, N.J. – The Saint Peter's women's volleyball team lost in straight sets Wednesday night against non-conference opponent NJIT.
Senior Laura Reinhart (Belvidere, N.J./Newton) finished with a game-high 15 kills. Freshman Amanda Colombo (Wallington, N.J./Wallington) registered 10 kills in the contest.
First set, the match remained closed with back and forth scoring between the teams. With the score tied at four, Saint Peter's went on a 7-1 run to take an 11-5 lead. After a timeout by the Highlanders, they responded with a 10-4 run to tie the set at 15. After taking a 16-15 lead, the Highlanders wouldn't look back as they went on to win the first set, 25-22.
In the second set, kills by Reinhart and Colombo would help Saint Peter's bolster an early 7-1 lead. The Highlanders would answer, going on a 6-1 run to bring the deficit to one point. Saint Peter's was able to stay ahead, fending off NJIT to hold a 20-18 lead late in the set. The Highlands would respond with a late surge, scoring four consecutive points to take a 22-20 lead. NJIT would on to the lead and win the second set 25-23.
In the third set, points were scored back and forth between the two schools. With the score tied at 12, the Highlanders went on a 9-0 run to take a 21-12 lead in the set. A late surge by the Peacocks wouldn't be enough, as NJIT went on to win the third set, 25-19.
Errors played a factor in the outcome, as Saint Peter's finished with 22 errors compared to just nine errors by the Highlands.
NJIT player Camilla Tinari finished with a team-high nine kills. Cathy Leung, Valerie Carroll and Fran Edmondson finished with five kills each.
With the loss, Saint Peter's falls to 0-4 while NJIT earns their first victory of the season.
The Peacocks run to action on Friday, when they travel to Pennsylvania to compete in the Lafayette tournament. On Friday, Saint Peter's will compete against Wright St at 2:00 p.m, and Fairleigh Dickinson at 7:00 p.m.
