Women's Volleyball Fall In Season Opener

Bethlehem, Pa. – The Saint Peter's women's volleyball team lost in it's season opener Friday afternoon in straight sets against non-conference opponent Rhode Island.

Sophomore Lauren Behrens (Frankfort, Ill./Lincoln-Way East) finished with team-high 10 kills. Senior Stephanie Mills (Albuquerque, N.M./Del Norte) and junior Dayana Arrufat-Rondon (Truyillo, Puerto Rico/Carvin School) finished with four kills each.

In the first set, the match remained close with back and forth points between the teams. With the scored tied at five; Rhode Island went on to score five consecutive points and would never look back. The Rams won the first set 25-15.

In the second set, Rhode Island picked up where they left off, taking a 9-2 lead. During the run, Saint Peter's committed six attack errors. Rhode Island began to commit attack errors as well, setting up a five-to-one Peacocks' run that would bring the set within three points. Rhode Island responded, going on a 15-to-9 run to win the set, 25-16.

Third set, Saint Peter's jumped out to an early 5-2 run behind the play of freshmen Behrens and freshman Brittany Smith (Egg Harbor Township, N.J./Egg Harbor Township). Rhode Island would follow with a 10-4 run to take the lead. Saint Peter's got the set within one point, led by kills from both Behrens and junior Lexandra Wirth (Medford, N.J./Shawnee). Saint Peter's effort wouldn't be enough, as Rhode Island pulled away and took the third set, 25-18.

Rhode Island finished the game with a total of 30 kills, compared to Saint Peter's 22 kills.

Rhode Island junior Catie Steffens finished with match-high 11 kills. Senior Jill Anderson finished with eight kills of her own. 

The Peacocks return to action on Saturday, when they take on both Lehigh at 12:30 p.m and New Hampshire at 3:00 p.m.
