Box Score JERSEY CITY, N.J. – Temple scored in the 94th minute to edge Saint Peter's 1-0 in the men's soccer season opener for both teams on Friday.
Jared Martinelli, the Owls (1-0) top scorer in 2012, took a pass from Vaughn Spurrier and then raced ahead of the defense and shot the ball from right to left past a diving goalkeeper to knock it into the left netting for the only tally of the afternoon.
Carlos Suarez (Santa Cruz, Bolivia/St. Benedict's Prep) made seven saves for the Peacocks' (0-1) in the loss while Marcel Maddee' (Berlin Germany, Gymnasium Villa Elisabeth) paced the offense with five shots.
Dan Scheck turned away five shots for Temple.
The game remained scoreless through the first regulation of the season before the Owls capitalized on a great chance 3:27 into the first overtime period to spoil the season opener for Saint Peter's.
Temple had the only shot in the extra session, but the Peacocks registered a couple of chances in the final 10 minutes, but could not convert. Nick Sifrin (Schlangen, Germany/Gymnasium Paderborn) nailed a shot right into Scheck in the 82nd minute and Maddee made Scheck make a great over the top save in the 85th minute for the squad's final scoring chance of the day.
Saint Peter's started five freshmen in the game and had seven freshmen see their first collegiate action on the afternoon. Sifrin, Lukas Binting (Berlin, Germany/Kant Gymnasium), Luke Fairlamb (Northampton, England/Unity College), Reece Lambert (Auckland, New Zealand/Sacred Heart) and Louis Mobbs (Hull, England/Sydney Smith) each made their collegiate debut in the starting lineup while Fredy Umanzor (Morristown, N.J./Morristown) and Chris Stragepede (Toms River, N.J./Toms River North) each saw time off the bench.
The Peacocks return to action on Wednesday at home against Lafayette. Match time is 4 p.m.
