Track and Field Heads To Rider To Participate In MAAC Championships; Women Set To Defend Outdoor Title

The Saint Peter's University track and field teams will complete the outdoor season this weekend in Lawrenceville, N.J. at the 2013 Outdoor MAAC Championships. The women are two-time defending champions, while the men finished third at last year's championships. Head Coach Mike Massone was named the 2012 Women's Coach of the Year.

Championship Info : The 2013 MAAC Men's and Women's Outdoor Track and Field Championships will be held this weekend, May 4-5, at Rider University in Lawrenceville, N.J. The meet begins at 4 p.m. on Saturday with the hammer throw, javelin, and long jump. Running events will start at 4:30 p.m. with the 4x800-meter relay. The 3000-meter steeplechase and the 10000-meters will also take place on Saturday. Admission on Saturday is free. The bulk of the meet is on Sunday with a trio of field events starting at 11 a.m. At noon, the 4x100-meter relay will kick off the day's running events. Admission on Sunday is $15 for adults and $5 for children and students with a valid ID. 

Last Time On The Track For Saint Peter's: Last weekend, the Peacocks competed in the Lions Invitational held by TCNJ...a handful of participants were sent by Saint Peter's in preparation of this weekend's conference championships...Jamelia Johnson led the women with two top-two finishes; the sophomore came infirst in the Triple Jump with a standard of 11.96m, while also being the top collegiate finisher in the Long Jump, coming in second with a leap of 5.53m...Shaena Wizzard also finished in the top-ten in the Long Jump event with an eighth place finish, and came in fifth in the Triple Jump...Essence Rogers and Morgan McLaughlin finished third and fourth, respectively in the 100m Dash...on the men's side, Isaiah Harris (Orange, N.J./Immaculate Conception) came away with a first place finish in the High Jump (2.03m), a fifth place finish in the Long Jump (6.62m) and a fourth place finish in the Triple Jump (13.67m)... 

2012 MAAC Outdoor Championships (Women) : Last year, the women clinched their second straight MAAC outdoor title, finishing with a total 278.5 points...Cristina Vilsaint was named Most Outstanding Field Performer on the women's side...six Peacocks recorded first place finishes during the weekend including: Cristina Vilsaint (hammer throw- 52.15m, shot put-12.03m), Sunita Kumar (javelin throw- 36.56m), Jamelia Johnson (long jump- 5.70m), Khadeen Issacs (high jump- 1.70m, discuss throw- 40.84m), Ronnah Parham (100m hurdles- 14.22) and Shona Potrzuski (400m- 55.32, 400m hurdles- 1:00.38)...Potrzuski's time of 1:00.38 in the 400m hurdles broke a thirteen-year standing MAAC record in the event by over a second...other notable performances were turned in by Asha Daley (2nd place 100m hurdles-14.57), Cherrice Brown (2nd place discuss throw- 37.49m) and Mary Clare Sobon (shot put- 11.61m)...

2012 MAAC Outdoor Championships (Men) : Last year, the men finished third with a total score of 118 points...Isaiah Harris won both the Triple Jump and the High Jump with distances of 15.26m and 2.04m, respectively, while Aaron Lucas (long jump- 7.34m), Trevarno Dwyer (400m- 49.63) and Jonathan Ocasio (100m- 10.94) also took home first place finishes. Additionally, the 4x100 relay team of Tevin Cunningham, Ocasio, Dwyer and Jarrek Babb, as well as the 4x400m Relay team of Rob Rogers, Dwyer, Babb and Kevin Persson came in first...Rob Rogers added a second place finish in the 400m hurdles with a time of 52.39...

Watch Harris Soar : At the Mason Spring Invitational on April 13th, Isaiah Harris became the first ever Peacock to clear the seven-foot mark in the High Jump event, claiming a second place finish with a jump of 2.05m...the jump established the highest mark of any MAAC athlete in the event thus far in the season and puts him tied for 13th in the NCAA Div. I East Outdoor Qualifying List...Harris was also the second-best collegiate finisher in the Triple Jump event, coming in fourth with a leap of 15.26...Harris was named the MAAC Outdoor Track and Field Performer of the Week for his accomplishment... 

Jill Of All Trades : At the CTC Championships on April 20th, Renee Brzyski set a Saint Peter's record in the Heptathlon, scoring 4833 total points...that mark put her at 21st in the NCAA Division I East Outdoor Qualifying List- the highest of any Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference student-athlete...the Heptathlon features seven events: the 100m Hurdles, High Jump, Shot Put, 200m Dash, Long Jump, Javelin Throw and 800m... 

Three-Peat : The women's indoor track and field team secured their third consecutive MAAC Indoor Championship on February 15th at the New Balance Armory Track & Field Center...the Peacocks secured their third straight title by finishing with a team score of 185.5...Rider University came in second with 164.5 and Manhattan College followed in third place with a score of 122.5...Iona College finished with 59 points, followed by Loyola University Maryland (50.5) and Marist College (32)...Sophomore Jamelia Johnson was voted the Most Outstanding Performer in field events after capturing first place finishes in both the Long Jump (5.81m) and Triple Jump (11.44m)...

At The Helm : Head Coach Mike Massone is in the middle of his sixth year at the helm of the Saint Peter's track and field program...Massone is a three-time MAAC Indoor Women's Coach of the Year, most recently receiving the honors following this year's 2013 Indoor Championship...Massone is also a two-time MAAC Outdoor Women's Coach of the Year...
