Marist Sweeps Twinbill Against Softball

JERSEY CITY, N.J. – Marist swept a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) softball doubleheader on Sunday. The Red Foxes (24-22, 10-4 MAAC) won both games in five innings after taking the opener 17-0 and the second game, 11-3.

Lee Harrison (Las Vegas, Nev./Coronado) paced the Peacocks (8-42, 1-13 MAAC) with two hits, including a three-run homer in the nightcap while Stephanie Gilronan (Saddle Brook, N.J./Saddle Brook) added a hit in each contest on the afternoon.

Maureen Duddy powered Marist with seven hits, eight runs and two RBIs while Danielle Koltz registered five hits, six runs scored and eight RBIs. Janine Lalli posted six hits, six runs scored and an RBI while Nicole Cheek notched four hits, five RBIs and two runs scored while Alyssa Zahka recorded four hits, five RBIs and a run in the two games.

In the nightcap, the Red Foxes scored in every inning, but the third to earn an 11-3 victory.

Cheek got the scoring started with an RBI double in the first for a 1-0 edge. Koltz increased the lead to 4-0 after smacking a three-home run in the second.

Zahka then knocked in a run on an infield single while a second run crossed the plate on an error on the play in the fourth for a 6-0 advantage. The Red Foxes then put the game away with five runs in the fifth to take an 11-0 advantage.

In the bottom of the fifth, Francesca D'Amato (Lyndhurst, N.J./Immaculate Conception) and Michelle Tinajero (Elmwood Park, Ill./Elmwood Parl) each reached on opposite field singles to open the inning before Harrison smacked a three-run homer to make the final score 11-3.

Erica Colon (Fairview, N.J./High Tech) took the loss in the nightcap.

In the opener, Marist scored in every inning to earn a 17-0 victory.

Zahka got the scoring started with an RBI single in the first.

In the second, Koltz singled home a run, Cheek hit a sacrifice fly and Zahka smacked a two-run homer for a 5-0 lead. Cheek added an RBI single in the third before Koltz and Cheek powered a five-run fourth with a two-run double and a two-run homer, respectively, for an 11-0 margin. The Red Foxes posted six runs in the fifth to seal the 17-0 victory.

Saint Peter's got a runner on in each of the first three innings. Harrison led off the bottom of the first with a single, but was erased on a double play. With two outs in the second, Chelsea Crews (Seattle, Wash./Mountlake Terrace) and Amber Velasquez (Hopewell Junction, N.Y./John Jay) reached on back-to-back singles up the middle, but a ground out ended the threat. Gilronan singled to start the third, but a strikeout, and two fly outs ended the inning.  After Gilronan's single, Marist retired the final nine batters she faced.

Shelby Beaver (Boyertown, Pa./Boyertown) took the loss in the opener.

Saint Peter's returns to action on Tuesday in a single-game against Seton Hall. Game time is 4 p.m.
