JERSEY CITY, N.J. – Siena swept a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) softball doubleheader on Saturday. The Saints (22-30, 7-3 MAAC) took the opener 7-3 and then won the nightcap, 9-4.

Amber Velasquez (Hopewell Junction, N.Y./John Jay) paced the Peacocks (9-41, 1-11 MAAC) with three hits, two runs scored and two RBIs while Stephanie Gilronan (Saddle Brook, N.J./Saddle Brook) added two hits and four RBIs in the two games.

Jessika-Jo Sandrini fueled Siena with four hits, two RBIs and two runs scored and also picked up the win in both ends of the doubleheader. Megan Volz added four hits, three runs scored and an RBI while Shannon Jones posted three hits, three runs scored and four RBIs on the day.

Siena had the early lead, but had to rally for the win in the first game against Saint Peter's in a 7-3 victory.

After the Peacocks scored three times in the fourth to grab a 3-2 edge, the Saints scored the final five runs to go on for the win.

Trailing 3-2, Paige Lloyd regained the lead for Siena with a two-run double in the fifth for a 4-3 edge. Jones sealed the win with a three-run homer in the seventh for a 7-3 advantage.

Jones also got the scoring started in the contest with a sacrifice fly in the first before Sandrini plated the second run on a sacrifice fly for a 2-0 lead after the first inning.

The game stayed that way until the fourth when Saint Peter's crossed three runs over the plate to take a 3-2 margin. It wasn't a hard hit inning for the Peacocks, but it did the job. Sierra Parker (Chino Hills, Calif./Caldwell College) started the rally when she reached on a ball that the pitcher could not handle before Chelsea Crews (Seattle, Wash./Mountlake Terrace) reached on a soft line drive that died at shortstop. With runners at first and second, Velasquez plated Parker with bloop single over the first basemen's head to cut the deficit in half. After Taylor Corretjer (Theills, N.Y./North Rockland) walked to load the bases, Gilronan smacked a single down the right field line to give Saint Peter's a 3-2 edge. With one out, Sandrini got out of the jam with a foul out to third and a lineout.

The Saints then scored the final five runs to earn the victory.

Shelby Beaver (Boyerstown, Pa./Boyerstown) took the loss in the opener.

The outcome of the nightcap was similar to the first. Siena took the early lead before the Peacocks rallied to tie the game only to see the Saints take the lead in the next inning and go on for a 9-5 win.

After Saint Peter's tied the game at 4 in the second, Siena took the lead for good in the third thanks to an Abbey Carpenter RBI single through the left side for a 5-4 edge.

The Saints added two runs in the sixth on RBI singles by Alyssa Lancaster and Lloyd and two runs in the seventh on a two-run single by Volz for a 9-4 lead.

Lee Harrison (Las Vegas, Nev./Coronado) reached on an infield single in the bottom of the seventh and touched home after Nicole Olmedo (Chino, Calif./Chino) reached on an error, but Siena came away with a 9-5 win.

The Saints jumped on the scoreboard early with four runs in the first to take a 4-0 advantage. Sandrini got the scoring started with an RBI single up the middle before Carpenter emptied the bases with a three-run double down the right field line.

The Peacocks answered for a run in the bottom of the inning to trim the margin to 4-1.  Francesca D'Amato (Lyndhurst, N.J./Immaculate Conception) started the rally with a single up the middle. After Beaver singled, Parker plated D'Amato with a double down the left field line while Beaver was cut down at the dish trying to score on the play.

Saint Peter's tied the game in the second after scoring three times in the stanza. After Crews walked, Velasquez and Corretjer each singled before Gilronan's double down the right field line plated Crews and Velasquez to trim the margin to 4-3.  With one out, D'Amato hit a comebacker to the pitcher and they tried to get Corretjer at the plate, but she scurried back to third base. Siena then went after Gilronan trying to get back to second and got the out for the second out, but Corretjer touched home in the process to tie the game.

The Saints then scored five of the final six runs to earn the sweep.

Erica Colon (Fairview, N.J./High Tech) took the loss for the Peacocks.

During the doubleheader, the two teams joined the MAAC in the Strikeout Cancer initiative. Prior to the game, several people through out honorary first pitches as a breast cancer survivor or in honor of family members that passed away after a courageous battle with cancer.
