Box Score 2 FAIRFIELD, Conn. – Fairfield swept a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) softball doubleheader on Saturday. The Stags (17-15, 5-3 MAAC) took the opener 9-1 in six innings and then completed the sweep with a 3-0 win in the nightcap.
Amber Velasquez (Hopewell Junction, N.Y./John Jay) paced the Peacocks (6-34, 1-5 MAAC) with two hits, including her first collegiate home run. Stephanie Gilronan (Saddle Brook, N.J./Saddle Brook) added three hits and Shelby Beaver recorded two hits on the day.
Sammy Ruffolo paced Fairfield with three hits, three RBIs and a run scored. Kristen Fillcia added two hits, three runs scored and two RBIs in the two games while Rae Ball posted three hits, three RBIs and a run scored in the opener.
The Stags scored four times in the first inning of the opener and never looked back to earn a 9-1 decision in six innings.
Fairfield got the scoring started in the first game when the Stags scored a run on an error before Nicole Capra knocked home the second run on a sacrifice fly. Ball then capped the four-run rally with a two-run single to center to give Fairfield a 4-0 lead.
Velasquez answered for Saint Peter's when she smacked her first career homer in the bottom of the second to trim the margin to 4-1.
Fairfield added three runs in the third on a Fillcia two-run single and a Ruffolo sacrifice fly to increase the advantage to 7-1. A Sam Frungillo homer in the fourth and a Ball RBI single in the sixth ended the game and hand the Stags a 9-1 victory.
Tori Feorenzo (Paramus, N.J./Paramus) took the loss for the Peacocks.
In the nightcap, Fairfield scored once in the first and two in the second to earn a 3-0 win.
Ruffolo got the scoring started with an RBI single to left field in the first and then tripled home a pair of runs in the second for the Stags three runs.
Saint Peter's put the first two runners on in the first and the third, but could not score. Gilronan and Lee Harrison (Las Vegas, Nev./Coronado) reached on consecutive walks to start the game, but a strikeout and two groundouts ended the threat. The duo opened the third with a pair of walks before a pop out, ground out and strikeout ended the threat. Velasquez was the only other runner to reach second base in the game when she doubled to right center with one out only to be stranded on base after a strikeout and a pop out ended the game.
Erica Colon (Fairview, N.J./High Tech) pitched well, but took the loss after allowing three runs in six hits with three strikeouts.
The Peacocks return to action at Lafayette on Wednesday. Game time is 3 p.m.
