Box Score STATEN ISLAND, N.J.- The Saint Peter's University baseball team managed to rally back from a 7-0 deficit, but were ultimately unable to complete the comeback as they dropped a 7-5 decision to Wagner College to conclude the three-game series.
The Peacocks (7-15) dropped all three games of the non-conferece series, with the Seahawks (8-14) taking both games of Thursday's doubleheader as well.
Six different Peacocks recorded a hit in the loss. James Spadaccini (Butler, N.J./Butler High School), Matt Speckmann (Cherry Hill, N.J./Cherry Hill West) and James Smith (Hatfield, Pa./North Penn) each finished with an RBI and a run scored.
John Leiter (Toms River, N.J./Toms River South) took the loss for Saint Peter's; giving up all seven runs of nine hits and four walks in 3.2 innings of work.
Senior Ethan Jackson (Howell, N.J./Colts Neck) closed out the game in relief of Leiter, pitching 4.1 scoreless innings of four-hit ball, while striking out one.
Three Seahawks finished with multi-hit games: Chris Smith (3-for-4) Ian Miller (2-for-3) and Tommy Mazurkiewicz (2-for-3).
The Peacocks trailed Wagner by a score of 7-0 heading into the fifth inning after a six-run fourth provided the hosts with a cushioned lead.
Saint Peter's began to chip away at the deficit in the sixth, scoring three runs in the frame. William Rawson led off the inning with a walk and moved to second two batters later on a single by Spadaccini. A two basehit by Speckmann scored Rawson for the first Peacock run of the game, and a passed ball would bring home Spadaccini and move Speckmann to third. Smith would deliver a sacrifice fly to center field to make the score 7-3 before the Seahawks ended the inning.
The visitors scored a run in the seventh on an RBI groundout by Spadaccini and added a final tally in the following inning on an error. With two outs in the ninth, Vincent Maietta (Franklin Square, N.J./St. Marys) would single to left to keep the Peacocks alive, but a strikeout by pinch hitter Brian Schroeder (Iselin, N.J./JFK-Iselin) finalized the win for Wagner.
Saint Peter's will host their first home contest of the 2013 this Tuesday, as it welcomes LIU-Brooklyn to Jaroschak Field for a single game. First pitch is slated for 3pm.
