Baseball Drops Twinbill To Wagner

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y.- The Saint Peter's University baseball team (7-14) dropped both games of today's doubleheader against the Wagner University Seahawks (7-14) by scores of 1-0 and 13-0.

Senior righthanded pitcher Zach Hopf (Woodbridge, N.J./Woodbridge) put in a tremendous effort on the mound in game one despite the loss, pitching a complete game and giving up just one run on six hits while striking out six. 

The Seahawks threw a trio of pitchers en route to the victory. Matt Morris threw the first four innings and gave up just three hits to be credited with the win, while Anthony Battaglia closed out the last two innings forr the save. Connor Smith pitched a scoreless fifth and sixth innings for the Seahawks. 

Vincent Maietta (Franklin Square, N.J./St. Marys) and Matt Mancini (Toms River, N.J./Toms River North) each finished with two hits in the loss, while the Peacocks as a team recorded eight. 

Saint Peter's left two runners on base in each of the second, seventh and ninth innings. In two of the three frames, William Rawson (Ashburn, Va./Broad Run) was able to get to third base but was unable to cross home plate.

Wagner scored what proved to be the game winning run in the third. Tommy Mazurkiewicz led off the inning with an infield  single and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt. A single by teammate Ian Miller moved Mazurkiewicz to third, who would score in the next at bat on a sac bunt by Chris Smith. 

The Peacocks were unable to muster the offense to bounce back in game two, as they managed just four total hits to Wagner's 19. 

Senior Chris Grimes (Iselin, N.J./JFK-Iselin) finished 2-for-3 in the loss. James Smith (Hatfield, Pa./North Penn) and Rawson each added a hit as well. 

Mat Yuhas (Freehold, N.J./Freehold Boro) received the loss for the Peacocks, going 3.2 innings and giving up 11 hits and six runs (three earned). 

Ryan Casey threw a seven-inning complete game for the Wagner to garner the win.

The Seahawks scored at least one run in every inning with the exception of the second. The hosts led by an 8-0 margin before exploding for a five-run sixth inning. 

Wagner was led by Miller who went 4-for-5, drove in five runs and scored one.

Saint Peter's closes out the three-game series against the Seahawks on Saturday, with a single game scheduled for 1pm.
