Box Score WEST LONG BRANCH, N.J.- The Saint Peter's University baseball team was defeated by a score of 12-2 this afternoon against Monmouth University. The Peacocks (7-12) trailed 12-0, until registering two runs in the top of the ninth before the host Hawks (9-10) closed out the win.
Both Nicholas Henriquez (Paramus, N.J./Paramus) and Vincent Maietta (Franklin Square, N.J./ St. Marys) recorded two hits to lead the Peacocks in the loss. Maietta also drove in a run- his second career RBI.
Brian Schroeder (Iselin, N.J./JFK-Iselin) was credited with the loss for Saint Peter's; pitching four innings and giving up seven runs (five earned) on eight hits.
Saint Peter's found themselves trailing early on, as the Hawks scored two runs in the first frame. Monmouth tacked onto their lead by scoring two in the third, three in the fourth, two in the fifth and three in the sixth.
Three different Hawks tallied at least two RBIs in the contest: Steve Wilgus, Jake Gronsky and Chris Perret. Each player also recorded two hits in the victory. Wilgus and Perret scoredtwo runs a piece, while Gronsky scored one.
Junior right-handed pitcher Ed Mejias (Ocean Township, N.J./Ocean Township) tossed three innings for the Peacocks in relief, keeping the Hawks scoreless in the seventh and eighth.
Reigning MAAC Rookie of the Week Robert Moore (Ridge, N.Y./Longwood High School) led off the ninth with a single through the right side, and advanced to second in the next at bat, after Michael Wulff (Madison, N.J./Madison High School) was hit by a pitch. A groundout by Ariel Ramirez (Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic/Babeque) moved both players up into scoring position, allowing Nick Cardamone (Freehold, N.J./Freehold Township High School) to bring home the first run of the game two batters later on an infield single. An RBI base-hit by Maietta in the next at bat scored Wulff to account for the second and last Peacock run.
Nathaniel Leon (Brooklyn, N.Y./Archbishop Molloy) also saw time on the mound for the Peacocks; pitching the the fifth inning and giving up four runs on three hits and two walks.
Saint Peter's finished with six total hits in the contest to Monmouth's 12 and committed 4 errors.
The Peacocks continue non-conference play this holiday weekend, as they face off against Wagner College for a three-game series scheduled for Thursday and Saturday. The teams will play a pair of contests on Thursday starting at 1pm and a single game on Saturday at 3pm.
