BRONX, N.Y.- The Saint Peter's University baseball team was defeated by the Sacred Heart University Pioneers this afternoon, 7-2, to start off the Franke Frisch Invitational.
Matt Mancini (Toms River, N.J./Toms River North), William Rawson (Ashburn, Va./Broad Run) and Robert Moore (Ridge, N.Y./Longwood High School) each finished with two hits to lead the Peacocks, who fall to 4-8 on the year.
Zach Hopf (Woodbridge, N.J./Woodbridge) tossed seven innings and gave up eight hits and six runs (three earned), while striking out seven to receive the loss.
Dan Perez finished 2-for-4, scored two runs and drove in one to lead the Pioneers (2-7).
The Peacock trailed from beginning to end, as the Pioneers scored all seven runs before Saint Peter's was able to tack on a run in each of the eighth and ninth innings.
Sacred Heart scored one in the fourth, two in the sixth, three in the seventh and one in the eighth.
Acting as the home team for the contest, Saint Peter's came to bat in the bottom of the eighth and managed to get on the board following a two-out RBI single by freshman Robert Moore. Moore singled in sophomore Nicholas Henriquez (Paramus, N.J./Paramus), who got on base after getting hit by a pitch and proceeded to steal second.
Mancini brought home Saint Peter's final run of the contest in the following inning; driving in Sean Henry (Brick, N.J./Brick Township) who walked to start off the inning.
Saint Peter's committed three errors in the contest.
The Peacocks return to action tomorrow afternoon, with a single game against in-state rival NJIT. First pitch is slated for 12pm.
