Box Score The Saint Peter's University women's basketball team dropped an 84-58 decision to the visiting Iona College Gaels this evening. The Peacocks were able to keep within striking distance, until a 14-4 run midway through the first half gave the Gaels a double-digit advantage they would maintain for the remainder of the contest.
With the loss, the Peacocks drop to 2-22, 2-11 MAAC, while Iona improves to 13-11, 8-5 MAAC.
Kaydine Bent led the hosts with a career-high 22 points, and just missed recording her third career double-double, finishing with 7 boards. Bent went 8-14 from the floor and 6-7 from the free throw line.
Jesika Holmes and Hala Mostafa also had career nights. Holmes grabbed a career-high and game-high 16 boards, while Mostafa managed 9 points in 17 minutes. Holmes added 8 points, 2 blocks and 2 steals.
Overall, the Peacocks shot 31.6% from the floor and 75% from the line. Saint Peter's managed to connect on just 1 of 11 three-point attempts.
Iona shot a blistering 50.8% from the field, 42.9% from long distance and 91.7% (11-12) from the line.
The Peacocks opened up the contest matching the Gaels point for point; managing to keep it a two-possession game until the fifteen-minute mark. Consecutive treys for Iona would open up an eight-point Iona lead (16-8) and force Saint Peter's Head Coach Stephanie DeWolfe to call a time out at 12:57.
A layup by Kaydine Bent following the break made it a six-point game, but the Gaels rattled off six straight points to establish a 14-point cushion (24-10 @ 10:14). The Peacocks were able to crack single digits (27-19) following a 7-3 spurt three minutes later, but could not get closer than 8 in the final minutes of the half.
Iona went into the half-time break leading the hosts 42-29.
Saint Peter's finished the frame with a 28.6 shooting percentage, going 12-42 from the floor. The Peacocks missed all four three-point field goal attempts and went 5-7 (71.4%) from the line.
The Gaels finished the half with a 55.% from the field, 60% from long distance and went a perfect 4-4 from the charity stripe.
Kaydine Bent led Saint Peter's in the first half with 10 points, while Jesika Holmes added 6 points, 12 boards.
Damika Martinez (14) and Aaliyah Robinson (11) both finished in double figures for Iona in the opening half.
Saint Peter's was outscored by an identical score (42-29) in the second half. The Gaels established their largest lead of the contest (28) with 11:04 remaining in the second half.
The Peacocks shot slightly better in the second half (35.3%), while the Gaels maintained their strong offense; finishing at 47.1% from the field.
Iona was led by Damika Martinez's 27 points. Joy Adams finished with a double-double of 14 points, 15 rebounds in the win for the Gaels.
Saint Peter's hits the road this Saturday, as they travel to Fairfield, Connecticut to face off against the Stags.
