Box Score NEW HAVEN, Conn. – The Saint Peter's women's basketball team fell to non-opponent Yale University, 66-35.
Aziza May (South Euclid, Ohio/Charles F. Brush) and Hala Mostafa (Cairo, Egypt/Modern Narmer Language School) both finished with a team-high seven points in the contest. Antonia Smith (Bronx, N.Y./Dwight School) finished with five points and five rebounds.
The Bulldogs began the first half on a 7-0 run, sparked by back-to-back field goals, followed by a 3-pointer from Nysha Sarju.
Saint Peter's would get on the board with a layup from Kaydine Bent (Bronx, N.Y./Harry S. Truman). Following a made free throw by Mostafa, Yale would respond with a jump shot from Sarah Halejan to take a 9-3 advantage. The Peacocks would score four straight points to cut the deficit to two. The Bulldogs would respond with a layup from Alex Osborn-Jones to give Yale an 11-7 lead.
Following a free throw by Katie Werner, May would make a layup to cut the Peacock deficit to three. Yale would answer with a pair of free throws to take a 14-9 lead. Next Saint Peter's possession, Antonia Smith would hit a 3-pointer to cut the deficit to a field goal.
Yale would run away in the first half with an 11-2 run fueled by its free shooting to take a 25-14 lead. A field goal by Mostafa would trim the Bulldog deficit. However, Yale would score 12 straight points to take a 39-16 lead. The Bulldogs would take a 39-18 lead into halftime.
In the second half, Yale opened up with a field goal by Meredith Boardman to take a 41-18 lead. Saint Peter's would respond with a make from Neechelle Ingram (Pocono Summit, Pa./Pocono Mountain East) to cut the deficit. The Bulldogs would respond with a pair of free throws by Halejan to take a 44-20 lead. The Peacocks would score back-to-back field goals to trim the Yale lead. Yale would answer with back-to-back baskets to take a 48-24 advantage.
Saint Peter's would score five straight points to trim the Yale advantage. However, the Bulldogs would go on a 9-2 run to take a 60-31 lead. Following a pair of free throws from Bridget Whitfield (San Diego, Calif./La Costa Canyon), back-to-back 3-pointers from Werner would help give the Bulldogs the 66-35 win.
The Bulldogs finished with two players in double-figures, including Osborn-Jones would led all scorers with 14 points.
With the loss, Saint Peter's falls to 1-8 overall while Yale improves to 5-6 on the year.
The Peacocks return to action Dec. 29, when the team opens up Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) play against Monmouth.
