Boston University Squeaks Past Men's Basketball On Free Throw With 1.7 Seconds Left, 66-65

BOSTON, Mass. – Nathan Dieudonne made 1 of 2 free throws with 1.7 seconds left to propel Boston University past Saint Peter's 66-65 in non-conference men's basketball action on Saturday.

Marvin Dominique (Miramar, Fla./Miramar [Fordham]) tied the game at 65 on two free throws with 1:28 left in the game. The junior also missed a 3-pointer at the top of the key with 33.5 seconds left with the chance to give the Peacocks (2-4) the lead. Dieudonne drove the lane and got a blocking foul on Saint Peter's with 1.7 seconds left and made the front end of two charity tosses. Chris Burke (Willingboro, N.J./Willingboro) heaved a ball to the other side of the court where Dominique caught it and called timeout with 0.6 seconds on the clock. Burke then attempted to get the ball to Dominique on the inbounds play, but Malik Thomas knocked the ball down and time expired.

Dominique paced the Peacocks with 20 points and seven rebounds for his second-straight 20-point performance. Tyler Gaskins (Rosewell, Ga./Centennial [Lawson State CC]) added a career-high 12 points in the loss.

Dieudonne fueled the Terriers (5-2) with 21 points while Maurice Watson, Jr., recorded 17 points and Dom Morris chipped in 12 points in the winning effort.

Saint Peter's battled the Patriot League preseason favorite and held the lead for the first half and some of the second half before Boston University rallied to edge the Peacocks in the final seconds for its sixth-straight win in the series.

Saint Peter's held the lead after intermission and took a 32-26 lead after a dunk by Dominique at 14:52.

The Terriers then used a 10-2 run to take their first lead of the game at 38-36 after two free throws by Dieudonne at 13:10, who powered the spurt with six points.

The Peacocks rallied back to take a 47-44 lead on a layup by Burke at 10:18 only to see Boston University answer right back with an 8-0 run to grab a 52-47 lead with 7:25 on the clock. Morris scored four of the eight points in that stretch.

Gaskins and Dominique each hit two free throws and Burke nailed a trey at 5:38 to even the score at 54 in a 7-2 Peacocks spurt.

Watson then sparked an 8-2 run with a traditional 3-point play to help Boston University grab a 65-59 lead with 2:51 left.

Saint Peter's responded to tie the game on a 7-0 run after Gaskins hit a jumper at 2:37, Elias Desport (Stockholm, Sweeden/Solna Gymnasium) hit two free throws at 2:11 and Dominique converted two at the line at 1:28 to square the game at 65. Dieudonne then hit 1 of 2 at the line to give the Terriers the victory with 1.7 seconds left.

The Peacocks led the first half for all but 15 seconds after jumping out to a fast start in the contest.

Trevis Wyche (Neptune, N.J./Saint Peter's Prep) started a 6-0 run when he drove the lane and kissed the glass at 19:45 before Dominique nailed a jumper at 19:11 and scored in the lane at 18:27 for a quick 6-0 edge.

The Terriers answered with a 5-0 spurt thanks to a 3-pointer by Watson at 17:41 and two free throws by Dieudonne at 16:33 to make it a one-point game.

Saint Peter's then went on a 9-2 run to grab a 15-7 lead with 12:05 on the clock in the first half. Dominique scored on a layup at 15:47 and Desi Washington (Harrisburg, Pa./Central Dauphin [Delaware State])  drilled a 3-ball at 14:35. After Dieudonne momentarily halted the surge with a layup at 14:12, Vic Adams (West Palm Beach, Fla./West Palm Beach [Dodge City CC]) drained a triple at 12:34 and Jamel Fields (Albany, N.Y./Cheshire Academy [Fairfield]) hit 1 of 2 at the line at 12:05 for an eight-point lead.

The Peacocks took a nine-point lead after a Dominique 3-pointer at 6:19 at 22-13 only to see Boston University score six unanswered points to trim the margin to 22-19 with 3:16 left after a Dieudonne basket and consecutive buckets by Morris.

Burke and Watson traded baskets before Adams nailed his second trey of the afternoon with 2.1 seconds left to give Saint Peter's a 27-21 lead going into the locker room.

Saint Peter's returns to action when it starts Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference play at Canisius on Friday. Game time is 7 p.m.
