Hampton Downs Men's Basketball In Home Opener, 64-59

JERSEY CITY, N.J. – Hampton downed Saint Peter's 64-59 in non-conference men's basketball action on Tuesday.

Chris Burke (Willingboro, N.J./Willingboro) notched his second career double-double after tallying 13 points and 11 rebounds for the Peacocks (0-2) while Marvin Dominique (Miramar, Fla./Miramar [Fla.]) registered 12 points and seven rebounds in the loss.

Du'Vaughn Maxwell paced the Pirates (2-0) with 20 points and Lawrence Cooks chipped in 12 points in the winning effort.

Saint Peter's held the advantage for nearly 34 minutes of the game before Hampton took the lead and held on for the win for its second win of the season.

With the Peacocks holding a 52-47 lead after a Jamel Fields (Albany, N.Y./Cheshire Academy [Fairfield]) free throw at 7:24, the Pirates scored the next nine points to take the lead it would not relinquish.

Cooks started the decisive run with a 3-pointer at 7:04 before Maxwell tied the game at 52 with a dunk. Maxwell then gave Hampton the lead for good on a layup at 5:18 before Deron Powers capped the run with a basket in the paint at 4:40 for a 56-52 lead.

Fields halted the spurt with a free throw at 4:28 and Dominique nailed a jumper to make it a one-point game with 3:51 left. Cooks and Dominique traded charity tosses to maintain the one-point margin with 3:19 left before Emmanuel Okoroba nailed a jumper at 2:16 for a 59-56 lead and Saint Peter's could get no closer the rest of the way.

The Peacocks jumped out to an 8-4 lead thanks to four points from Burke to start the game. The Pirates came back to tie the game at 10 before Saint Peter's grabbed a 17-10 lead on Kris Rolle's (Miami, Fla./Monsignor Edward Pace [Colby Community College) first points in a Peacocks uniform at 11:35 that was part of a traditional 3-point play and two free throws from Fields.

The Pirates then went on a 10-1 run that saw three different players score in the spurt to take a 20-18 edge with 6:16 left in the first half.

With Hampton holding a 22-20 edge, Saint Peter's went on an 11-2 run to go into the locker room with a 31-24 lead. Dominique fueled the run with five points, including his first dunk at the Yanitelli Center.

After Quadir Welton (Philadelphia, Pa./Math, Civics And Science Charter) gave the home team its biggest lead on a free throw to start the second half at 32-24.  The lead hovered between two and eight points over the next 11 minutes with Saint Peter's grabbing an eight-point lead one more time before Hampton used a run of nine unanswered points to take the lead for good and even the series at one game a piece.

Fields and Desi Washington (Harrisburg, Pa./Central Dauphin [Delaware State]) each finished the game with nine points.

Saint Peter's returns to action on Sunday at Kent State. Game time is 2 p.m.
