Box Score JERSEY CITY, N.J. – Iona defeated Saint Peter's 1-0 in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) men's soccer action on Wednesday.
David Giddings (Newburgh, N.Y./Newburgh Free Academy) made two saves for the Peacocks (3-8-4, 1-4-2 MAAC) in the loss.
Franklin Castellanos scored the Gaels (8-6-1, 5-2-1 MAAC) after he got a long ball in the box and then made a move to beat a defender and then had a 1-on-1 with the goalkeeper and found the twine at the 34:44 mark for the lone goal of the afternoon. Julian Petrello turned away four shots in the winning effort.
Iona scored in the 35th minute and held on for the one-goal win against Saint Peter's.
The Peacocks kept Petrello on his toes during the game, but could not convert. Marcel Maddee' (Berlin, Germany/Gymnasium Villa Elizabeth) had a shot turned away in the 17 minute.
AJ Johnson (Westampton, N.J./Rancocas Valley) had a shot blocked by the Gaels defense in the 51st minute and then Petrello made saves against Luke Fairlamb (Northampton, England/Unity College) (67th minute), Maddee' (72nd minute) and Lukas Binting (Berlin, Germany/Kant Gymnasium) (90th minute). Binting's shot was Saint Peter's final chance on the afternoon.
The Peacocks return to action at Quinnipiac on Saturday. Match time is 2 p.m.
