Box Score BUFFALO, N.Y. – Despite a furious comeback attempt in the final eight minutes, Canisius defeated Saint Peter's 4-3 in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) women's soccer action on Saturday.
Greta Vogel (Fountain Hills, Ariz./Fountain Hills [Scottsdale Community College]) scored twice for the Peacocks (2-14-0, 0-10-0 MAAC) while Kaitlyn Lima (Kearny, N.J./Kearny [New Jersey City]) posted a tally and two assists in the loss. It was Vogel's first career multi-goal performance while Lima notched her first tally in a Saint Peter's uniform after tallying seven goals and seven assists at New Jersey City College last season.
The Peacocks head into the MAAC Women's Soccer Championships as the No. 11 seed and will face sixth-seed Siena on Thursday at 11 a.m. at the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex in Orlando, Fla.
Brittany Krause registered two goals and an assist to pace the Golden Griffins (5-13-1, 3-7-0 MAAC) while Katie Griffin found the twine twice and Kelly McMahon dished out two assists in the winning effort.
Canisius jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first 81 minutes before the Peacocks made a furious comeback attempt in the final eight minutes, but the Golden Griffins held on for the one-goal victory.
After Canisius scored in the 81st minute, Saint Peter's found the twine three times in the final seven minutes and two seconds.
Vogel put the Peacocks on the scoreboard off a feed from Lima at 82:58 and then the duo teamed up again 82 seconds later to make it a two-goal deficit. Lima then notched her first goal in a Saint Peter's uniform when she scored off a corner kick with 47 seconds remaining to trim the margin to 4-3, but the squad did not have another shot in the final minute and the Golden Griffins earned the one-goal victory.
For the second-straight game, Saint Peter's gave up a tally in the first minute when Griffin found the back of the net off a McMahon assist 40 seconds into the match. McMahon then set up Kraice at the 26:01 mark to give Canisius a 2-0 lead at halftime.
Krause notched her second goal of the day off a Brianna Smith feed at 69:57 and then Krause set up Griffin at 80:12 to give the Golden Griffins a 4-0 lead. The duo of Lima and Vogel tried to bring the Peacocks back, but fell short in the final regular season game of the year.
Molly O'Halloran (Colonia, N.J./Union Catholic Regional) made six saves for Saint Peter's and Megan Tock turned away five shots for Canisius.
Vogel finishes the regular season with a team-best four goals for eight points while Lima paced the team with three helpers along with one goal to rank fourth on the squad with five points.
The Peacocks lost to Siena in the regular season meeting on Sept. 28 in Loudonville, N.Y. It will be the second match against the Saints in the postseason in team history after Siena downed Saint Peter's 2-0 in the 1996 MAAC Women's Soccer Championships.
