Box Score WEST LONG BRANCH, N.J. – Monmouth downed Saint Peter's 2-0 in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) men's soccer action on Wednesday night.
Carlos Suarez (Santa Cruz, Bolivia/St. Benedict's Prep) made three saves for the Peacocks (2-7-4, 0-3-2 MAAC) while David Giddings (Newburgh, N.Y./Newburgh Free Academy) made two stops in the loss.
Tomas Penfold registered a goal and an assist for the Hawks (6-5-3, 5-0-1 MAAC) while Jacob Rubinstein added a tally. Eric Klenofsky turned away four shots in the winning effort.
Monmouth scored in the waning seconds of the first half and added a marker in the second half en route to its third-straight victory against Saint Peter's.
The Hawks got on the scoreboard with 16 seconds left in the first half when Penfold connected with Rubinstein to give Monmouth a 1-0 lead going into halftime.
Penfold sealed the win with a tally off a Derek Luke feed at 74:27 for a 2-0 advantage.
The Peacocks had several chances to score in the game, but could not convert. Marcel Maddee' (Berlin, Germany/Gymnasium Villa Elizabeth) had his shot saved by Klenofsky in the fourth minute before the Hawks netminder turned a shot away off the foot of Jack Pounce (Little Chafont, England/Dr. Challoner's Grammar) in the 10th minute for Saint Peter's only two shots on goal in the first half.
The Peacocks had four shots on the net in the second half. Louis Mobbs' (Hull, England/Sydney Smith) header was stopped by Klenofsky in the 50th minute. AJ Johnson (Westampton, N.J./Rancocas Valley) (56th minute) and Omar Crowl (Brooklyn, N.Y./Thomas Jefferson) (64th minute) each had scoring chances blocked by the Monmouth defense before Crowl had his shot turned away by Klenofsky in the 64th minute. Rafael Braga (Union, N.J./Union) gave Saint Peter's its final scoring chance, but missed high in the 89th minute.
The Peacocks return to action on Saturday at home against Canisius. Match time is 2 p.m.
