Box Score The Saint Peter's University women's basketball team dropped a 93-62 decision to the Iona College Gaels this afternoon. With the loss, the Peacocks fall to 0-17, 0-6 MAAC, while Iona improves to 9-8, 4-2 MAAC.
Iona's 93 points are the second-most the Peacocks have allowed this year. Saint Peter's was out-scored 48-25 in the first half and 45-37 in the second.
Kristal Edwards led Saint Peter's with a team-high 15 points, while Aziza May and Jesika Holmes added 14 and 12, respectively.
Edwards recorded 10 of her 15 points in the second stanza.
Saint Peter's established an early 5-2 advantage to start the first half, but the Gaels proceeded to form a 17-2 tear to take a commanding 19-7 lead at the 12:49 mark. During that time, the Peacocks went 0-6 from the field and committed 4 turnovers.
Aziza May broke a near six-minute scoring drought, draining a trey from the top of the key just before the shot clock expired at 12:15 to make the score 19-10.
Iona soon exploded for a 24-10 run over the next eight minutes (41-18); connecting on 4-5 three-point field goal attempts. During that time, Jesika Holmes accounted for 6 of Saint Peter's 8 points.
Both teams concluded the half with 7 points each, to enter the half-time break with a score of 48-25- in Iona's favor.
For the half, Iona out-shot the Peacocks 44.7% to 35.5%. The Gaels connected on 5-12 three-point attempts, while Saint Peter's made just 2 of 5.
The Peacocks were led by Holmes 8 points, 4 rebounds in the stanza, while Aziza May contributed 6 points, 4 assists.
Kristal Edwards and Aziza May opened up the second half knocking down back-to-back treys to spark a 6-2 Peacock run (50-31). Iona responded with a 7-2 run of their own however, to reopen a 20+ point lead.
Saint Peter's managed to come as close as 18 following an Edwards' steal and fast break layup, but the hosts scored eight straight to create a 26-point lead (71-45).
Iona established their largest lead (34) after a three-pointer by Kadesia Johnson at 3:41, that made the score 84-50.
For the game, Saint Peter's shot 37.5% from the floor, 38.9% from three and 87.5% from the line. Iona shot 49.3%, 38.9% and 78.3%, respectively.
The Peacocks went a perfect 6-6 from the line in the second half.
Kaydine Bent turned in a solid performance for Saint Peter's, contributing 7 points and 7 boards.
Iona was led by Damika Martinez's 19 points, on 9-14 shooting. Aleesha Powell added 15 points for the Gaels.
Saint Peter's travels to Lawrenceville, NJ this Thursday to face the Rider University Broncs at 7pm.
