Box Score The Saint Peter's University men's basketball team (6-12, 1-7 MAAC) fell by a score of 59-48 to the Marist College Red Foxes (5-14, 2-6 MAAC) this evening in the McCann Arena.
The Peacocks shot a season-low 25.9% from the field, connecting on just 23-48 field goal attempts. Saint Peter's was able to drain just 2-18 three-point attempts, both which were made by Desi Washington.
Darius Conley led the squad in the loss; recording a team-high 16 points and fell short of a double-double by 1 rebounds (9 total).
Yvon Raymond also finished in double-figures for the Peacocks; contributing 10 points- 6 which came from the free throw line. Raymond added 5 boards, 5 steals, 2 assists and 2 blocks.
Saint Peter's entered the first media timeout of the first half trailing the Red Foxes 7-2; shooting just 1-8 from the field. The Red Foxes proceeded to outscore the Peacocks by a 7-2 margin over the next minute and a half to take a seven-point lead nearing the thirteen-minute mark. Marist established their first double-digit lead, 14-4, following a tip in off the offensive board by Anell Alexis (13:05).
Two made free throws by senior guard Chris Prescott brought the visitors within five (16-9) but Marist's Chavaughn Lewis proceeded to knock down a long two twenty-eight seconds later to regain a seven-point advantage (11:05).
Both teams went on to exchange baskets, until two straight baskets by the Red Foxes reopened a nine-point lead (20-11). Back-to-back buckets by Blaise Ffrench and Yvon Raymond brought the Peacocks within five, but the Red Foxes out-scored the visitors 7-2 to head into the half-time break with a 27-17 lead.
For the half, the Peacocks shot just 25.9%, connecting on 7 of 27 shot attempts. Saint Peter's failed to make a three-pointer in the half, going 0-7 from long distance. Marist meanwhile shot 46.2% from the field, 50% from beyond the arc.
Senior guard Yvon Raymond led Saint Peter's in the half with 5 points, 2 rebounds, while Blaise Ffrench added 4 points. The Red Foxes were led by Isaiah Morton's 9 points.
Desi Washington opened the second half draining a trey in transition following a steal by Raymond, but an 8-2 Marist run in the next four minutes of play opened up a thirteen-point lead for the hosts (35-22).
Saint Peter's managed to come within 11 points on two occasions in the next sixty seconds, but the Red Foxes would rattle off four straight points to go in front by fifteen (41-26) heading into the under-12 media timeout.
The Peacocks came out of the intermission scoring four unanswered points, all on free throws, to get within eleven (41-30).
Two minutes later, Raymond knocked down 1-2 free throws to make the score 42-33; the closest the Peacocks had been since the opening seconds of the half.
A steal on the inbound pass by Washington followed by a floater in the lane by Conley made the score 42-35, until the hosts scored four straight to regain a double-digit lead.
Marist was able to go in front by as many as 15 (54-39 @ 3:22), but the Peacocks maintained their defensive intensity with the full court press and again were able to come within eight points (56-48) after a putback layup by Conley with 1:27 remaining. That was the closest the visitors got however, as the Red Foxes added three more markers before gaining the win.
Saint Peter's was out-rebounded by a 43-30 margin and committed 6 turnovers while forcing 13. They shot 66.7% from the line.
The Red Foxes shot 47.9% from the line, 50% from three-point range and 50% from the charity stripe.
Marist was led by Lewis Chavaughn (19 points, 9 rebounds) and Isaiah Morton (10 points, 7 rebounds, 3 assists). Adam Kemp added a game-high 18 boards for the hosts.
Saint Peter's returns to action next Friday, with a 7pm road game against Iona.
