The Saint Peter's University Peacocks (2-7) dropped an overtime heartbreaker to the La Salle University Explorers (6-2-2) this evening, 1-0 in Newark. With 4:07 to play in overtime, Zach Turchi took a shot from 20 yards out to beat Carlos Suarez. Suarez did make nine saves for the Peacocks.
The first half went scoreless as La Salle had eight shots total, five on goal. The Peacocks had two shots, but neither were on goal. The Explorers had two corners to the Peacocks one in the first half. Suarez made five saves for Saint Peter's.
The second half also went scoreless although both teams had good opportunities. Saint Peter's had eight shots in the second half, two on goal, while La Salle had five, three on goal. The Peacocks also had two corners to the Explorers one. Suarez made three saves in the second half.
With 4:07 to play in the first overtime, a shot was deflected off a Peacock to Turchi who buried it from 20 yards out to give the Explorers the win.
La Salle outshot Saint Peter's 16-10 overall and 10-2 for shots on goal. The Peacocks did have four corners to the Explorers three.
Saint Peter's will return to action next Friday as they begin the MAAC portion of their schedule with a match at Siena.
